DURHAM, N.C.— In the first home Duke Athletics contest in 190 days, the Blue Devil and Virginia women's soccer teams battled for 120 minutes in heavy rain, before finishing in a 1-1 draw in double-overtime at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Duke (1-0-1, 0-0-1 in ACC) came from behind for the second straight match and held off a strong Virginia (1-0-1, 0-0-1 ACC) offense to remain undefeated on the young season.

"I thought we did some really nice things tonight," said Duke head coach Robbie Church.  "I thought we moved the ball well. We broke some of their press, especially early. Our field people, we've got to give them credit. They may be the MVP tonight. (The field) did start to collect water at the end of it.  So, it was hard to keep our possession game.  So, we had to go a little bit longer. I think we did some really nice things, but the second half, it was tough. We were holding on the second half. They kind of put their will on us. They've got a veteran team. Their three front players are as good as anybody in the country. I thought they were outstanding."

Both teams showcased good passing and defense early in the match, before the Cavaliers registered the first shot at the 13:50 mark as Alexa Spaanstra sent one wide right.

Virginia came back with its best chance at a goal less than two minutes later as Samar Guidry got free on the right side of the pitch and had a one-v-one chance against Blue Devil sophomore goalkeeper Ruthie Jones, who was making her first collegiate start.

Guidry tried to send a shot to the far post, but Jones made a diving stop to her right to keep the score knotted, 0-0.

"It was exciting," said Jones.  "It was definitely a good game and so I was just excited to come out and play a great team. I felt confident coming in with our team. I think we did well. Just exciting times. Exciting conditions. Made things a little more interesting, but it was a good time."

Virginia attempted one other shot in the first 45 minutes, but Jones easily grabbed it.

The Blue Devils were held without a shot in the first half but showed good movement with the ball, while the Cavaliers attempted five.

Virginia came out in the second half and had a quick shot that went high by Rebecca Jarrett in the first minute and then added another attempt in the 51st minute off a corner kick that went just wide.

The Cavaliers were able to break through at the 52:40 mark as Lia Godfrey drove into the box and blasted a shot into the top right corner to give Virginia a 1-0 lead.

After allowing the goal, Duke moved on the attack and were able to collect its first shot at the 55:01 mark.  Senior Tess Boade floated a pass into the box over the Cavalier defense to senior Karlie Paschall at the far post, but Virginia's goalkeeper, Laurel Ivory, was there to stop the attempt.

Six minutes later Duke sophomore Sophie Jones was taken down at the end of the Blue Devils' bench.  Boade stepped up to send a free kick in.  Blue Devil junior Marykate McGuire leaped and slightly headed a pass to the feet of senior defender Caitlin Cosme.  A product of New Hyde Park, N.Y., Cosme finished a shot into the bottom, right corner from six yards to even the score, 1-1.

"(Caitlin) has had a wonderful start to her senior year," said Church.  "She's our leader back there and she's our voice. She see's things on the field and connects players together. She's a battler and wins balls in the air."

The goal for Cosme was the third of her career and marked the second straight contest she has scored to open the season.

With 7:40 remaining in regulation, the Cavaliers were fouled 35 yards away from the goal and sent a perfect cross to the head of Diana Ordonez, who's diving header went just right of the far post.

Virginia nearly took the lead in the 87th minute as Cam Lexow headed a shot along the goal line on the ground that got past Jones, but redshirt senior Mia Gyau was there to clear it off the line.

The Cavaliers outshot the Blue Devils, 7-3, in the second period and held a 12-3 advantage for the match heading into overtime.

Virginia dominated possession in the first overtime, but the Blue Devils were able to keep the score even, 1-1, as the Cavaliers took three shots.  Duke held off Virginia in the second overtime and concluded the match with a draw.  For the contest, the Cavaliers outshot the Blue Devils, 16-3.

"Grit was one of things that we came into the game knowing we would have to have to play this good team," said Jones.  "Especially as the game went on, conditions got worse. It was hard to see. It was hard to play. I think just the grit we had, the intensity we kept to stay in the game, to come back after going down one was huge. It was everything we needed today."

In her first collegiate start against one of the top offenses in the nation, Jones finished with six saves over 120 minutes.

"The whole game really we were under a lot of pressure and I think our backline did a great job of dealing with those things that came our way," added Jones.  "We definitely have some things to clean up, but I think a lot of that comes with the conditions and with the excitement of the game, so we just have to stay sharp."

Duke will remain at home Sunday, Sept. 20 as the Blue Devils face Wake Forest for the second time over the last 10 days.  Opening kick will be at 5 p.m., live on the ACC Network from Koskinen Stadium.
