COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team started the 2021 season with a victory at the Rocky Mountain Open on the campus of the U.S. Air Force Academy Saturday night.
No. 2 Oklahoma raced past the No. 13 Air Force Falcons and Arizona State Sun Devils with a final tally of 414.450 to AFA's 384.100 and ASU's 371.750. With the victory, the Sooners have won 21 of the past 22 Rocky Mountain Opens.
Junior Spencer Goodell claimed the all-around title with a career-best 81.250 and the Sooners brought home all six event titles and five of six individual event titles on the night.
"It was a good night," said OU head coach Mark Williams. "We only counted one miss and did a lot of good routines after a challenging preseason. I was impressed and I'm happy with how we started. The first four events we swept the top three in each of those events.
"I'm really happy with Morgan Seyler, he stepped up tonight. Happy to see Spencer Goodell win the all-around, who's still trying to qualify for Winter Cup, so this was a good experience for him."
The Sooners began the meet on still rings, posting a solid 68.050 tally highlighted by a 13.800 set by senior captain Matt Wenske and a 13.750 routine from Goodell, a career best.
"With all the challenges just to get to this point, it was great to get the opportunity to come here and perform the way we did. This is what they work so hard to do and we come away with another Rocky Mountain title." - OU Head Coach Mark Williams
Moving to floor exercise for the second rotation, OU showed why it's consistently one of the top teams in the country on the event year-in and year-out. The Sooners went 70-plus for the first time on the evening, scoring 71.450. All-American senior captain Gage Dyer paced the squad with an impressive 14.850 to take the individual event title. Junior Morgan Seyler brought home second overall with his 14.450. OU took the top five spots across all competitors with freshman Jack Freeman (14.100), Wenske (14.050) and Goodell (14.000) rounding out the top five.
In the third rotation on pommel horse, Oklahoma put up a respectable 67.550 on arguably the toughest of the six events. Redshirt sophomore Braden Collier claimed his second career event title, putting up a 13.900. OU swept the podium yet again with junior Vitaliy Guimaraes (13.750) and Seyler (13.550) taking second and third overall, respectively. The tallies were career bests for both Guimaraes and Seyler.
The fourth rotation saw OU head to high bar and put up a 67.750. Guimaraes and Freeman led the Sooners with 13.800s that were good for shares of second overall. Redshirt sophomore Cesar Gracia registered a 13.600 in his first action of the season to bring home fourth while Dyer put up a 13.300 for a share of fifth.
Heading to the fifth rotation on vault with a comfortable lead, the Sooners showed no signs of letting up, scoring their second 70+ event score of the meet with a 71.400. Seyler won the individual crown with a 14.400 vault while redshirt junior Mason Menser was on his heels with a 14.350 that was good for second. OU put up the top six scores in the event.
On the last event, parallel bars, OU coasted to the victory with a 68.250 in the rotation. Wenske won his second event crown of the meet with a 14.150 while Goodell put up a 13.800 that was good for second best overall.
The Sooners return to the floor next weekend with a familiar opponent when Air Force travels to Norman for OU's home opener at McCasland Field House. The meet is set for a 6 p.m. CT start.
