NORMAN – The No. 2 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team opened a new season with a victory as they took down No. 21 Arizona State 197.450-194.725 Sunday afternoon inside the Lloyd Noble Center.
"Overall, I'm very pleased with how the team performed today," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "The first meet is always tough. You're trying to gauge where you're at in your preparation and you know what to expect but not 100 percent what to expect. Getting this one under your belt gives you some insight to where people are at, how they compete under pressure, how they did feeling the butterflies for the first time in eight months. I was really pleased with how they did."
Twelve different Sooners competed in the meet with three making their collegiate debuts in Audrey Davis, Audrey Lynn and Katherine LeVasseur. Every member of the senior class competed at least two events as Carly Woodard made her career debut on floor.
"I was so impressed by our performances by our walk-on athletes," Kindler said. "We had over seven performances out of 24 from our walk-on athletes. They were phenomenal. I was super impressed with them."
The Sooners swept the event titles as senior Anastasia Webb took home the all-around with a 39.650. Webb also took home floor with a 9.925 and beam with a 9.950. Lynn, junior Allie Stern and senior Evy Schoepfer shared the vault title with matching 9.875s. LeVasseur took home her first career event title with a 9.925 on bars.
Oklahoma started with a 49.325 in a vault rotation that featured three freshmen. Davis led off the first meet of 2021 with a Yurchenko full for a 9.825. Junior Allie Stern added a 9.875 on a Yurchenko 1.5, followed by a 9.875 from Lynn who debuted a front pike half. LeVasseur and Webb tallied matching 9.850s on their Yurchenko 1.5s, with Schoepfer anchoring with a 9.875.
"Audrey Davis, her first routine of her career was exceptional and led us off really great," Kindler said. "Vaults were really well done, landings could have been better. Audrey Lynn stuck her landing – she's a freshman – and that's the first time she's out there for us and knocks out a 9.875. That's a huge score for a freshman to achieve in her first meet."
The Sooners would extend their lead in the second rotation with a 49.425 on bars. The highlight of the rotation was a 9.925 from LeVasseur thanks to a stuck double layout dismount. Senior Karrie Thomas began the rotation with a stuck double layout for a 9.875. Senior Jordan Draper made her return to the bars lineup, earning a 9.850 in the No. 3 spot. Smith and Webb tallied matching 9.875s and Davis anchored with a 9.850 for Oklahoma.
"I really felt like we had some good landings, but not as great as they could have been," Kindler said. "Karrie Thomas led us off with an exceptional routine and a stuck landing. Katherine LeVasseur right behind her with a stuck landing. I was really pleased with bars."
Oklahoma earned a 49.400 on beam in the third rotation. Leading off for the second rotation, Thomas was stunning on beam as she nailed her series and stuck her dismount for a 9.875. Sophomore Jenna Dunn showcased her gorgeous triple series and notched a 9.800 in the No. 2 spot. Davis showed off her flexibility and elegant lines on beam for a 9.825 in the No. 4 spot.
Moving to the No. 5 spot as a senior, Woodard was superb and consistent as always for a 9.9. Anchoring with a huge 9.95 was Webb who capped off the rotation with a stuck dismount.
"Beam was solid," Kindler said. "We were working out some jitters and had some wobbles that were uncharacteristic, but that will happen when you're out there for the first time. If you hold back and you're cautious at all on beam it can come back to hurt you. Really proud of Carly Woodard and Anastasia Webb who knocked it out. Karrie Thomas in the first spot, you could not have done a better routine in that first spot."
The Sooners wrapped up the meet on floor with a 49.300. Draper led things off with a 9.825 on an upbeat and energetic routine, followed by a 9.825 from Woodard in her floor debut. Schoepfer notched a 9.800 in the No. 3 spot. Junior Emma LaPinta matched her career high with a 9.9.
Webb put on a show in the No. 5 spot, earing a 9.925 to bring her all-around score to a 39.600 in the all-around and earn her first AA title of the season. Smith anchored with a 9.825.
"Floor is the most difficult event as you're training for endurance purposes, especially with COVID and the interruptions we've experienced," Kindler said. "To see them really come through 100 percent and really strong with their last passes, I'm excited about the group on floor. They had great energy. I'm excited about where this team is at and where they can go."
The Sooners will host a top-10 matchup when No. 4 Utah comes to the Lloyd Noble Center on Jan. 17. The meet is slated for a 4 p.m. CT start on ESPN2.
