DURHAM, N.C. – In light of recent social events, the Duke rowing program is excited to announce an official partnership with Forward Justice, a nonpartisan organization located in Durham that is dedicated to advancing racial, social and economic justice in the U.S. South.
Duke rowing will look to promote Forward Justice initiatives through social media efforts and fundraising campaigns over the coming months. The alliance began as a result of rising seniors Ema Kuczura and Laura Navarrete looking into ways for the Blue Devil program to get involved in the greater Durham community, as social and racial inequalities have been brought to the forefront of the U.S. this summer.
In a joint statement, Kuczura and Navarrete said, "As Duke student-athletes, we distinctly benefit from institutions that perpetuate racial, social, and economic injustice. So, when yet another mirror was held up to the nation this spring, there was an overwhelming desire within the team to take action in support of the social justice community.
In an attempt to understand the landscape better, we went to Dr. Terrance Ruth with the Justice Love Foundation for his insights on local stakeholders. He immediately suggested that we contact Forward Justice—a group of talented and trusted individuals who are committed to the pursuit of social justice right here in Durham and across the American South.
Laura and I are incredibly grateful to everyone at Forward Justice for embracing our team's energy and helping shape it into something more sustainable and meaningful for all those involved. It's our hope that this partnership is just the beginning of a more inclusive and responsive dialogue between Duke and the Durham social justice community."
Founded in 2016, Forward Justice serves as a strategic partner for nonprofit organizations, coalitions and networks that spearhead movements organizing for a more just, equitable and free South. Comprised of organizers, lawyers, creatives, strategists and directly impacted people, Forward Justice is dedicated to ensuring that the 'We' in 'We the People' is truly inclusive and representative of all Americans. The organization has worked collaboratively with groups like the NC Second Chance Alliance, the NC Fines & Fees Coalition and the Duke University Exoneration Clinic.
"The Forward Justice team is excited about our new partnership with Duke student-athletes as they support of our work to create a more just and equitable south," Forward Justice Communications Manager Brittany Cheatham said. "We believe in the courage, compassion and leadership of this next generation, and are proud to support initiatives to deepen their engagement with their campus and community. We are looking forward to deepening our partnership and bringing their leadership, vision and voices to our work."
