FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In coordination with Mountain West Conference, Colorado State University, state, county and local officials, the Colorado State men's and women's basketball and women's swimming and diving programs are preparing to begin the 2020-21 season.
As has been the case with all CSU Athletic Department training and practice operations, all game management and protocols have been reviewed and approved by state, county and University health professionals and approved by the Colorado State Pandemic Preparedness Team.
In addition, changes delineating college and professional sports from youth sports has led to the following protocols and procedures.
Women's and Men's Basketball Approved Home Game Protocols
Within the protocols of the Mountain West, there are three tiers of personnel allowed at MW competition sites, with the tiers based on the ability to wear masks/face coverings, the ability to practice physical distancing (6 feet or greater) and the role played in connection with the competition. In all cases, all individuals should wear masks/face coverings and physically distance whenever possible. Access to areas like locker rooms, athletic training room and court area are strictly limited to Tiers 1 and 2. The tiers, per the Mountain West protocols, are as follows:
- Tier 1 – This tier consists of individuals for whom physical distancing and face coverings are not possible or effective during athletic training or competition. Examples of relevant individuals include student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials. Tier 1 individuals should be limited. All Tier 1 individuals should wear masks/face coverings, except for student-athletes and officials on the playing surface. Physical distancing should be adhered to whenever possible.
- Tier 2 – This tier consists of individuals who come into close contact with Tier 1 individuals but can reasonably maintain physical distance and use face coverings during their interaction. Examples of relevant individuals include certain team staff (e.g., athletic department staff) and certain operational staff (e.g., security, event staff and Conference staff). Tier 2 individuals will maintain physical distance and universal masking while performing their jobs, and any interaction with Tier 1 individuals must be approved by the Team Administrator or Team Physician/Head Athletic Trainer (or designee), and both parties must maintain physical distance and wear face coverings.
- Tier 3 – This tier includes individuals who provide event services but are not in the same vicinity with Tier 1 individuals (and should closer contact become necessary, would be reclassified into Tier 2). Tier 3 individuals should minimize contact with Tier 2 individuals and observe masking and physical distancing at all times. Examples of relevant individuals include certain operational staff (e.g., housekeeping, catering, sanitation and transportation) and media/broadcast.
- At this time, no spectators will be allowed at Moby Arena, in coordination and agreement with University, state, county and local officials.
For Colorado State athletics, all student-athletes and personnel that are Tier 1 are tested three times a week for CoVID-19. If a positive test if detected, CSU public health officials are notified and the affected individual will be instructed on isolation and quarantine requirements, consistent with CDC and public health recommendations.
For home events, CSU will comply with all Mountain West, University, state, county and local guidelines, including mask usage and contact tracing. While the list of protocols that has been approved are more extensive, among the more visible pieces are these items:
- To better limit and manage the interaction, each team will have its own designated and dedicated entrance to the competition building, their locker room and the competition venue itself.
- Press, operations and bench areas have been backed off from the edge of the court to at least six feet.
- The team bench for the Rams and the visiting team, press row, operations and media seating area will have physical distance seating that is assigned directly to each person to facilitate contact tracing if necessary. The bench areas will include dedicated water bottles, towels and chairs for each student-athlete, coach and staff member.
- Extensive cleaning will occur of the venue and various areas, prior to, during and after each game, with additional time provided between doubleheaders to allow for appropriate sanitization.
- All personnel attending the game in an operations or participation role will be required to wear masks throughout the entirety and go through an on-site testing protocol, based on their tier level.
- Tier 1 personnel will have a separate check-in with the sports medicine staff and receive approval to enter the building for the event, including a wristband that allows access to all main areas.
- Tier 2 personnel will enter through the North concourse entrances for basketball and will have submitted an on-line health screening form on the day of the event. Upon arrival, they will enter through the North main entry, conduct additional health screening, checked for temperature and verify that they are on pre-approved registration lists to attend the game in their official capacity. Those personnel will be given the appropriate wristband for access to their operational areas.
- For Tier 3 personnel at Moby Arena for basketball, those people will follow the same as Tier 2 personnel, with the exception that Tier 3 personnel are not allowed to access the court level at any time.
- Diagnostic testing will be readily available during the events for symptomatic or suspected cases of CoVID-19, with an isolation/quarantine room available should it be needed.
- Teams in season will follow MW and NCAA testing recommendations as outlined in the NCAA Core Principles of Resocialization of Sport document.
- Student-athletes may bring their things (towels/cap/goggles/backpack/water bottles) to your designated spot. NO sharing of equipment/gear.
- Unless swimming or diving, all student-athletes will be required to wear a mask and physical distance the entire competition.
- No use of the diving hot tub for the events.
- Painter's tape will be utilized for the flow of traffic.
- Limited number of people allowed on deck, including announcer, coaches and participants. The only people permitted behind the blocks will be the student-athletes who are about to race (heat before). Numbers will be taped in the stands, physically distanced apart, and each swimmer will be assigned a number to assist with contract tracing if required.
Travel to away competition has been approved by the University Pandemic Preparedness Team in accordance with Mountain West Conference protocols. When CSU teams travel out of state, the Tier 1 group (which consists of the only individuals allowed in the travel party) will comply with Mountain West, state, county and local guidelines of the location being traveled to from arrival in the area to departure, including but not limited to mask usage and other safety protocols. This may allow for differences in mask usage and other safety measures when the programs are physically outside of Colorado.
