STORRS, CONN. – The UConn women's swimming and diving program has received four signed Letters of Intent and will welcome Maggie Donlevy, Claire Ryland, Paige Sugra and Julia Pioso into the program as freshmen in the fall of 2021.

"I am really encouraged with the young women we have coming into our program next season," UConn head coach Chris Maiello said. "They are strong, bright, and very goal-oriented. I expect them to impact our roster on Day One in several events."

Maggie Donlevy (Bayside. N.Y.) swims for The Mary Louis Academy (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.), one of the strongest swim programs in the New York City area, and for the Cross Island YMCA Barracudas. She is a sprinter who specializes in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and as a sophomore she became the first individual state champion in Mary Louis Academy history with a 23.32 in the 50 free.

Donlevy was also a two-time finalist who captured third place in the 50 free and sixth place in the 100 free at the NYSPHSAA Girls Federation Championship. She is also a U.S. Swimming Scholastic All-American.

"We are really excited to have Maggie join our program," Maiello said. "Her family already has some great history with us, as her cousin was a terrific competitor for us, and I think familiarity with our program helped us in our effort to recruit her and get to know her family.

"Maggie fills a very specific need for us, coming into the class of 2021. We graduate several sprinters and her skill set will fit right into those vacant positions. Her best times would score in the top eight in her events at the conference level and we expect her to continue to improve before she arrives next year."

Claire Ryland (Hummelstown, Pa.) is also a sprinter who attends Hershey High School and competes for the Hershey Aquatic Club. She was a two-time finalist at the PIAA District 3 Girls AAA Championship, finishing third in the 50 free with a 23.64 and fourth in the 100 free with a 51.56. She also captured eighth at the PIAA Girls AAA State Championship with a 23.88 in the 50 free.

"Claire is also a sprint specialist, out of Pennsylvania, who also will fill a need for our team both in individual events and relays," Maiello said. "She is a hard worker who comes from a strong club known for tough, gritty, strong athletes. We expect Claire will score in multiple events at the conference level and compete for top spots in relays. We really like her makeup, her training history and her upside. I have no doubt she will do very well at UConn."

Paige Sugra (Hainesport, N.J.) swims for Rancocas Valley Regional High School (Mount Holly, N.J.) and MLY Phoenix. She placed ninth in the 100 backstroke in the finals of the NJSIAA Meet of Championships in 56.47.

"Paige is a backstroke specialist who will immediately impact our team," Maiello said. "Her times are good enough to make our starting lineups in both relay and individual events. Her athletic improvement curve is also impressive, which leads us to believe she will continue to develop into a top backstroker. She will be competitive for finals in our conference and that will certainly add depth for us in those events."

Julia Pioso (Clifton, Va.) is a diver out of Centreville High School in Clifton, Va. This year, she earned a seventh-place finish in the 1-meter at the 2020 VHSL Class 6 State Championship. In 2019, she won the 1-meter competition at the VHSL 6D Region Championship. She also competed in the 2020 AAU Nationals in July.

"We are incredibly excited to have Julia join our team," UConn head diving coach Josh Arndt said. "She has some great experience that will no doubt help us in the pool and lead to success for her at UConn."

The four newcomers figure to boost the Huskies' depth and make strong contributions beginning in 2021-22.

"This class will for sure help us with as we strive toward our goal of becoming a great team with great teammates and winning a conference championship," Maiello said. "I can't wait to have them join our UConn  family."
