Jessica Lee has been a staple for the Gophers golf team throughout her career. In the 2019-2020 season, Jessica finished tied for 77th at the Minnesota Invitational (79-78--157, +13), tied for 5th at The Prospector Invite as an individual (75-80-79--234, +18) and placed 69th at the Juli Inkster Invitational (84-78-83--245, +29). Now a senior, she looks forward to the spring semester and being back with her teammates.
GopherSports sat down with Jessica to discuss summer training, the fall semester and her passion for learning Korean to better communicate with her grandmother.
GopherSports: How has this semester differed from the past?
Jessica Lee: I am currently not back on campus, but I am excited for my return in the spring semester! We have had team Zoom meetings and those are a great way to see everyone and catch up, despite a few of us being away from campus. With last year’s spring season unexpectedly ending and being apart from the team for so long, I miss seeing and practicing with everyone and will definitely cherish my final semester with the team.
GS: What did you do over the summer to practice and improve your skills?
JL: Over the summer, I worked on returning to my basics. Before quarantine began, I struggled with my putting and felt uncomfortable while I stood over a putt. This summer, I focused on improving my stroke and focusing on how my hands felt as I made a putt. I also played a lot of golf with my parents! It was nice to spend time with them and joke about my junior golf days.
GS: Did you pick up any fun hobbies during the summer quarantine period?
JL: Over the summer, I learned Korean and went on a lot of walks throughout the day; these activities helped keep me busy and active during the quarantine period. As winter quickly approaches and walks will no longer be as enjoyable, I am planning on learning how to breakdance. I don’t have very high expectations for my success, but I think it will be a fun way for me to pass time while staying indoors.
GS: What are you most looking forward to this season?
JL: I am really excited to compete, practice and spend time with the girls this season. Ever since COVID began, I realized how easy it is to take things for granted. As I enter my final season, I really want to appreciate the remainder of my time at the U. Even if we aren’t able to compete, the moments that we create at practice and being together will create life-long memories.
GS: Now entering your senior season, what is something you want to improve on from last year?
JL: As I enter my senior year, I want to lower my number of putts per round. I was not comfortable with my putting last season and I want to apply this summer’s efforts to competition. I also want to improve on living in the moment. Throughout my time on the team, there were moments where I focused on the homework or other things that I had to complete after practice or a tournament. I would like to change my mindset to enjoy and fully immerse myself in whatever I am currently doing.
GS: How are the underclassmen contributing to the team?
JL: The underclassmen definitely bring a lot of good, positive energy to the team and also provide great feedback. It’s nice to be able to spend time with them and hear their opinions on what we’re doing well and where we can improve. They are a great group of girls; although they are younger than me, I find myself learning a lot from them as well.
GS: What are most proud of from your career so far?
JL: I am the most proud of my ability to balance academics with athletics. It took some time, however, I have learned how to succeed in both endeavors. There were definitely moments where I struggled, but these difficulties influenced me to become the person that I am today as I learned how to cope with stress and reach out to my teammates.
GS: What is your favorite class you are taking this semester? Why?
JL: My favorite class this semester is my Korean class. My family is from Korea, so I have always been exposed to the Korean culture and language from my grandma living at home with us. However, I don’t speak Korean and I wanted to learn the language and hopefully return to Korea after COVID and be able to better understand and appreciate my surroundings. I really enjoy my Korean class because I am able to spend time with my grandma. By practicing my pronunciation and conversing with her in Korean, we have grown closer. I am both amazed and thankful for her sacrifice to immigrate to another country that speaks a completely different language.
GS: As we head into the winter season, are you a fan of the snow? What are your favorite winter activities?
JL: I enjoy snow, but in limited quantities. I think freshly fallen snow is beautiful and I find it calming to watch snow fall. Despite its beauty, I dislike walking to my classes in the snow and trying not to slide/fall on the snow after it freezes over. During the winter, I enjoy skiing and drinking hot chocolate while watching Christmas movies.
