BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's tennis opened the 2021 dual campaign Friday evening in Boise with a commanding 6-1 victory over the Montana Grizzlies. It had been 320 days since they last played a competitive match, but the Blue and Orange did not let that affect them as they claimed the win.
Kyryll Kryvchun led the way in singles winning at the No.1 position. Blake Bayldon and Simon Arca Costas were solid as well as they claimed victory on court one in doubles, then followed with singles victories. By the time the match ended the Blue and Orange had claimed victory in two doubles matches and five in singles.

"I am super pleased with the win. Montana is a well coached team, they're always tough," said head coach Kristian Widen. "We came out and executed really well and did what we talked about before the match. I was a little surprised that we won that big, but it's because the guys were ready, even with the long break. We have a team that wants to win, so they worked extremely hard for today."
Boise State claimed the early momentum taking a tough doubles point from the Griz by a 2-1 score. Victories for the Blue and Orange came on courts two and one, respectively. The first match off was the No. 2 position where the Bronco duo of newcomers Lukas Ridemar and Caden Moortgat rolled to a 6-3 win over Montana's Oisin Shaffrey and Chase Bartlett.
After Montana had tied the doubles point at 1-1, Boise State's No. 1 tandem of Bayldon and Arca Costas rallied to bring home the point for the home side. Trailing 5-4 and again at 6-5, Bayldon and Arca Costas rallied twice to force a tiebreaker where they won 7-5 to claim the match 7-6.
Coach Widen had entered the match a little concerned about the long layoff, "Absolutely, I was concerned with the focus after not playing that much since last March, but a lot of these guys have played individual tournaments on their own since then. So, I knew most of them were going to be ready. We talked a lot about the team supporting each other, something that we haven't seen or done since last year and they did a great job of that. But yes, I was concerned and a little nervous, especially with three new players playing and starting for the first time."
Arca Costas led the charge in singles as he claimed a quick straight-set victory 6-2, 6-3 over Sam Nicholson at No. 4. That gave Arca Costas his 41st career singles win at Boise State.
Up 2-0, Boise State redshirt-junior Kryvchun extended the Broncos advantage with a two-set victory on court one 6-2, 6-1 over Shaffrey. The win was the 23rd in his career at Boise State, in addition, he improved to 9-4 overall at No. 1 singles in his second season.
"I thought it was fantastic from the start," said Kryvchun. "The guys were ready to play, we had great energy and we were all focused. I think there was a lot of excitement about having our first match in over 300 days. Personally, I just loved having the new guys there, they were so intuitive and so intense from the start. It was crazy to see them all get wins in their first matches. It was just amazing how everyone played and we executed really well, we did everything we were told to do and that's why we got the win."
Wyatt DeMulling clinched the match at 4-0 for the Blue and Orange when he defeated Montana's Moritz Stoeger 6-2, 6-2 at the fifth position. DeMulling's win increased his team-best career victories mark to 52.
Bayldon increased the Broncos' lead to 5-0 following a straight-set win at No. 3 singles where he dispatched Bartlett 6-3, 6-2, that was the redshirt-junior's 16th career win in the Blue and Orange.
The final Bronco point came from newcomer Lawrence Sciglitano on court six. The redshirt-sophomore held off the Griz's Guillermo Martin in a classic battle that saw three tiebreakers. In his Bronco debut, Sciglitano pulled it out in a third set 10-point tiebreaker 10-4 to take the match 7-6(5), 6-7(2), 1-0(4).
The Broncos will be back in action Sunday morning when they host the Grand Canyon Antelopes out of the Western Athletic Conference. Note: no fans are allowed at Boise State sporting events this spring as part of the school's COVID-19 safety protocols.
