EVANSTON, Ill. -- Juniors Naz Hillmon (26 points) and Leigha Brown (22) combined to score 48 points and helped lift the hot-shooting No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team to an 84-63 victory over No. 15 Northwestern in a top-20 matchup Sunday (Jan. 3) at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Michigan never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 35 points.
Hillmon was 10 of 14 from the field (71.4 percent), and Brown shot 80 percent from both he field (8-for-10) and from beyond the arc (4-for-5). The Wolverines (7-0, 2-0 Big Ten) connected on 29 of their 46 shots (63 percent) and eight of 13 (61.5 percent) from three-point range. It marked the second time this season that U-M topped the 60 percent mark.
U-M's 7-0 start to the season ties a program-best with the 1999-2000, 2011-12 and 2015-16 Michigan teams.
Hillmon collected her fifth double-double of the season with and second in as many games with her 12 rebounds, while Brown added six assists to her stat line against the Wildcats. Senior Hailey Brown also had a double-digit performance with 13 points and Amy Dilk added nine points with seven rebounds and four assists.
The Wolverines dominated the glass, outrebounding Northwestern, 41-31, with eight offensive rebounds.
Michigan pushed the pace of the game early, going on an 11-0 run with eight points from Hillmon and a triple from Leigha Brown that forced Northwestern (4-2, 2-2 Big Ten) to burn a timeout with 6:15 remaining in the first quarter. The Wolverines' run continued as they scored 19 points while allowing only four to Northwestern's four -- including going 5-for-5 from beyond the arc to take a 23-8 advantage with just over three minutes left in the first quarter.
The U-M offense was hot over the first 16 minutes, shooting 14-for-16 from the floor (87.5 percent) and 6-for-6 from three-point range to take a 37-18 advantage over the Wildcats early in the second quarter.
Hailey Brown found Hillmon underneath for an easy layup with 4:55 left in the second quarter to double up NU, 41-20. The Wolverines put together a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 52-24 with a minute to play in the first half and took a 55-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
U-M's 55 points were the most in a half against a Big Ten team since they scored 58 against Minnesota on Dec. 30, 1997, against Minnesota.
Hillmon and Leigha Brown combined for 40 points in the first 20 minutes, scoring 20 each as Brown went 7-for-8 shooting from the field and knocked down four three-pointers, while Hillmon went 8-for-10 from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds. U-M shot 74.1 percent (20-for-27) from the floor and 87.5 percent (7-for-8) from three-point land.
Michigan continued to run up its lead in the third quarter, taking a 29-point advantage, 69-40, on a Hillmon jumper with 2:50 left. Despite not making a field goal in the final two and a half minutes of the third quarter, the Wolverines took a large 71-47 lead into the final 10 minutes.
The Wolverines kept Northwestern scoreless for more than three minutes in the final quarter to go onto victory.
Michigan will kick off a two-game homestand Thursday (Jan. 7), when it hosts Nebraska at Crisler Center. Opening tipoff is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
