The coronavirus caused many people to see the need to expand the number of places to unwind while still staying put. Some spruced up their balcony, deck or front porch. Others focused on a patio to create a vacation spot in their backyard.
Home improvement experts have found that some of the funds not spent traveling or dining out over the last 10 months are going into long-delayed dream projects such as outfitting an outdoor living space.
A covered patio with a fireplace or heater can make being outside comfortable year-round. Draperies make it cozy and quality lighting illuminates like the indoors.
Under-the-sky entertaining spaces are desirable to home shoppers, says Todd Prendergast, co-owner and president of Windermere Realty Trust. He and other real estate experts say people are on the lookout for a home on a larger lot or at least one promising privacy and security.
In this week’s real estate gallery, we look at homes for sale with outdoor living spaces. Some areas are entered through a glass wall system that folds away to erase the boundaries between indoors and out. All are high-end and well designed.

Designers show how to start with casual seating in an ignored part of your yard. A durable rug, perhaps a TV, can enhance a “garden room.” Have ideas? Email jeastman@oregonian.com
