LOS ANGELES — The USC women's basketball team made another stout home stand in another tight finish at Galen Center, fending off visiting Colorado this time as the Trojans tacked up a 56-52 victory today. The Buffs had carved a 12-point USC lead down to two entering the final minute, but the Trojans held their ground again to chalk up another Pac-12 win. USC improves to 5-5 overall and to 3-5 in conference play, while Colorado goes to 4-6, 2-5.
USC was shooting 44 percent from the floor by halftime, overshadowing Colorado's 38 percent effort. The Trojans had landed five first-half 3-pointers to three by the Buffs, accounting for USC's 30-24 halftime advantage. The Trojans would stay the course from an efficiency standpoint, wrapping the game at 44 percent from the floor to beat out Colorado's final 35 percent outing. The Buffs missed 10 free throws in the game but had the edge on the boards 34-31.
Four Women of Troy scored in double digits, led by Jordan Sanders' 16 points. Desiree Caldwell finished with 13 points with three 3-pointers made, while Endyia Rogers had 12 points along with five assists. Angel Jackson recorded a double-double for the Trojan cause with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Colorado had two players finish in double figures. Peanut Tuitele led the Buffs with 15 points, and Mya Hollingshed had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
After falling in a quick 5-0 hole, USC piece together a 9-0 surge, nudging into the lead on Desiree Caldwell's 3-pointer at 6:55 and then climbing to a 9-5 advantage on a strong take to the hoop by Angel Jackson. Endyia Rogers and Jordan Sanders would both add threes before the close of the first, with the Trojans gripping a 15-11 lead after 10 minutes of action. Sanders would account for the fist six USC points of the second before Jordyn Jenkins hit the back end of a trip to the stripe to net USC a 22-13 lead three minutes into the frame. Caldwell and Rogers would each land threes in the next stretch, and the Trojans held a 30-24 lead at halftime.
USC came out hot in the third, getting buckets from four different Trojans in working ahead 39-27 by the midpoint of the third. Caldwell nailed her third 3-pointer of the day along the way, with Kyra White joining the scoresheet to get USC a lift. Colorado countered with an 8-2 answer, but Angel Jackson got the last word for the Trojans in the third to make it a 53-35 USC lead entering the fourth. The Buffs reeled the Trojans in to within four points at 47-43 before Jackson joined the double-digit party for USC and Sanders drained a long three to get USC up 52-43 with 5:30 to play. Again the Buffs would turn up the pressure on the Trojans, answering a Rogers bucket with five points in a 20-second span to carve the score to 54-52 USC with 1:20 to go. That score would stand through a tense final stretch until Caldwell got sent to the stripe with 1.3 seconds left. The captain calmly sank both, and USC was up 56-52 with barely a tick to go. Colorado got a shot off, but it was blocked by White to wrap up a wild but winning finish for the Trojans.
This win over Colorado follows a one-point victory by the Trojans over Utah in their last game on Jan. 8.
