• Happy Lunar New Year! This Lunar New Year, the City of San José is asking residents to continue to persevere against COVID-19. As many new infections occur when families and friends gather, the safest way to wish a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year is from afar.
  • Enjoy a feast with members of your own household
  • Video chat with family and friends (using Facebook Rooms, Zoom, or another free virtual meeting room)  
  • Send texts, cards, and recorded well wishes to family without social media  
  • Send red envelopes electronically (Paypal, Venmo, gift cards) and play games online 
  • Limit in-person celebrations to outdoor gatherings of no more than three households

• Summary of Current Health Order Requirements for Businesses: Santa Clara County is currently in Purple Tier, which means businesses that have a lower risk of spreading COVID-19 are allowed to open sooner. For a full list of what is allowed in Santa Clara County, visit the Jan. 25 Health Orders Executive Summary page. County compliance inspectors are out visiting businesses to make sure they all have a Revised Social Distancing Protocol dated after Oct. 11, 2020, and are following the rules. In addition to maintaining a 6-foot distance, and masks for employees and customers, businesses must post capacity limitation signs and make sure the number of customers and workers onsite is never more than are allowed. All workers that can telework must continue to do so, and indoor breakrooms are closed in most cases. Businesses must alert the Public Health Department if workers test positive for COVID-19, and require workers to tell their employers if they were at work while sick. Updates on City of San José Services and/or Operations

• San José City Hall, City Offices to Close February 15: The City’s EOC will continue operating while most noncritical City services will be closed in observance of the Presidents’ Day Holiday. Public safety and utility services will operate during the holiday.
  • Customer Contact Center (San José 311): The City’s Customer Contact Center will be closed on Feb. 15. An answering service will provide information and assistance to callers. Non-emergency requests requiring follow-up will be routed to the proper department and handled during open business hours. 
  • San José Public Library’s Express Pickup Service: The Library’s Express Pickup and online chat services will not be available on Feb. 15. All services will resume on Tuesday, Feb.16. The Library’s online collection, eLibrary card registration, eLearning resources, and streaming services are always available at sjpl.org. 
  • San José Community Centers and Regional Parks: City community centers remain closed due to the current pandemic. There are no park closures on Feb.15. Residents are advised to follow Santa Clara County’s physical distancing orders, avoid gathering or engaging in group activities, and comply with all county and state health guidelines while using parks, trails, open spaces and other park amenities. Stay up to date on seasonal closures. 
  • Garbage and Recycling Service: Garbage and recycling service collection scheduled for Monday, Feb.15, will occur as usual. Residents can contact their garbage, recycling, or yard trimmings company to report missed collections, damaged carts, or to change cart size. Visit www.sjenvironment.org/lookup to locate your collection companies.

• Schools Winter Break Meal Information:  Many school districts will be on Winter Break from Feb. 15-19 and their food distribution sites for youth may not be operating. Please refer to this flyer for information provided by the Santa Clara County Office of Education and the various school districts. We also urge you to check with your school district website for the most current information. Visit the Santa Clara County Office of Education website for the most up-to-date information about site closures and meal distribution.

• Mediation Program to Help Keep People Housed During Pandemic: Thousands of people in San José are facing housing insecurity. The City of San José’s Housing Department has partnered with the County of Santa Clara Office of Mediation and Ombuds Services (OMOS) to create the Housing Mediation Program. The program helps resolve rental housing disputes related to the pandemic so people can stay in their homes. The program is voluntary for tenants and landlords. There is no cost to participate. Many types of disputes are covered, including non-payment of rent, lease issues, and nuisance issues. Mediation is conducted online, and mediation services are available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. To request mediation through this program, the tenant or landlord should contact the City of San José’s Housing Department at 408-975-4480 or RSP@sanjoseca.gov. A City of San José staff member will help get the mediation process started. To learn more about this program, please visit the OMOS website.

• Small Business Webinars: The next San José small business webinar will take place on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 3:30 p.m. Small businesses can get free help with loan or grant applications, as well as legal, bookkeeping, and operations advice. Free and low-cost services include one-on-one advice, workshops, loan applications, contracting, international trade, and much more. Register online to learn how to get help from organizations like SCORE, Silicon Valley Small Business Development Center, AnewAmerica, and the Minority Business Development Agency. Small business webinars are hosted frequently and recorded for reference, for a video archive of past topics visit the Business COVID-19 Guidance page.

• San José Public Library Offers Free Virtual Tech Help: During this crisis, using a computer for work, school, or keeping connected to your loved ones is vital. Is your computer running slow? Do you need help with tech security? How about learning to use Zoom, social media, Microsoft Word, or Excel? From the basics to beyond, the San José Public Library’s (SJPL) tech savvy volunteers are available to provide you with one-on-one assistance and will offer advice and problem solving. SJPL’s volunteer Tech Mentors are only available online. Get started by setting up your appointment here.

• Code Enforcement Helps Businesses Meet County Requirements: City of San José Code Enforcement inspectors have started visiting businesses in the communities most impacted by COVID-19. The outreach is focused on helping businesses protect their customers and employees by following the County Health Order and other requirements. Code Enforcement inspectors are focused on outreach and education - they are there to help. As part of this effort, inspectors are collaborating with other City departments and sharing business resource and customer safety support information. The most common violation our inspectors have found is the lack of a capacity sign. Businesses can learn how to calculate their reduced maximum capacity and download a free sign template at www.sccgov.org/covidcapacity.  

• Don’t Ruin Lunar New Year With a Fireworks Fine: Celebrate Lunar New Year safely, without the use of illegal fireworks, including firecrackers. Fireworks fines now begin at $1,000 and increase up to $3,000 for subsequent violations. It’s not worth it! Report illegal firework activity – snap a picture and file a report online at www.sanjoseca.gov/fireworks or call 408-535-5600 or 311. Include as much detail in your online report as possible to assist the City with taking enforcement actions.

• Family Camp Closed for 2021 Camping Season: After careful consideration, the City of San José Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is canceling the upcoming 2021 camping season at Family Camp due to COVID-19 and budget constraints. During this time, the camp administration team and partners will continue working on projects and amenity enhancements to help make the 2022 season even more special. Family Camp is also proud to support essential workers for other outdoor agencies during this time, and these individuals will assist in caretaking for the facilities. COVID-19 Testing, Tracing, and Support Services  

• ‘No Wrong Door’ for Vaccine Distribution: As of Feb. 4, any Santa Clara County resident age 65 or older can receive their free COVID-19 vaccine from the County Health System, regardless of their healthcare provider or insurance. Residents age 65 and over are encouraged to make their free vaccine appointment at sccfreevax.org or by calling Valley Connections at 408-970-2000.

• COVID-19 Vaccination Progress: Santa Clara County has released a dashboard to track the progress of vaccination of our community. In addition to overall progress, the dashboard includes information by race/ethnicity, gender, and age. As of today, 12.6% of County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Of residents age 65 and over, 36.1% have received at least one dose.

• You Can Get Help with Quarantine or Isolating: The County offers support options for people who test positive or have been in contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive. If you need help with food, bills, or a place to stay while you isolate or quarantine, please call 408-808-7770 to learn about support services from the County of Santa Clara.

• Get Tested: If you need a COVID-19 test, don’t wait! A high rate of testing helps identify and stop the spread of COVID-19 cases, and is one of the factors that is helping our county reopen under State regulations. Some testing sites are listed below, but there are many more throughout the county. For a full list of COVID-19 testing sites in Santa Clara County, go to www.sccfreetest.org or call 2-1-1. 

• Appointments Available for Testing in San José, Milpitas, and Morgan Hill: Getting tested for COVID-19 is convenient and easy. Appointments can be made at the rotating city-based sites a week in advance, and five days in advance at the ongoing Santa Clara County Fairgrounds operation - visit www.sccfreetest.org. Valley Medical Center testing sites can now provide automated results via text message – often as soon as the day after the test is administered.
