MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota swimming & diving program concluded its 2020-21 dual meet season in dominating fashion on Saturday, as the women swept Iowa and Nebraska while the men won their dual against Iowa. As a result, both teams will head into the 2021 Big Ten Champions fresh off of impressive Big Ten Conference victories.

For the second consecutive dual meet of 2021, the Gopher women started strong with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Emily Cook, Emma Lezer, Emma Linscott and Indy Jongman secured the victory with a time of 1:39.53.

Cook had a standout day overall, also winning the 100 backstroke with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 53.66.

In the 50 freestyle, Minnesota finished with the top four spots on the podium. Maggie Summit sped her way to first place with a time of 23.08, while the trio of Olivia Bloomer (23.23), Pyper Doo (23.32) and Maeve O'Driscoll (23.46) rounded out the top four.

After sweeping the breaststroke events in the season opener, Lezer continued her dominance by winning the 100 and 200 breast once again. The sophomore won the 100 breast (1:01.43) and later went on to claim the top spot in the 200 breast (2:16.90) as well, finishing just ahead of Molly Urkiel (2:17.12), who took second in the latter event.

Freshman Megan Van Berkom hauled in her first career event victories in the meet, beginning with a first place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:59.38), which marked an improvement of over four seconds on her lifetime-best time. Van Berkom closed out the day with another win in the 400 individual medley with an NCAA 'B' Cut time of 4:14.63, leading the Gophers to a one-two-three-five finish. Rachel Butler finished second with an NCAA 'B' Cut time of 4:14.72, while Kelli McCarthy (4:21.04) and Abbey Erwin (4:24.87) claimed third and fifth.

Van Berkom was not the only freshman to obtain a signature victory, as Indy Jongman won the 200 back (1:57.92). Jongman and Cook combined for a one-three finish, with Cook taking bronze thanks to a 1:59.13 time.

In the diving well, Sarah Bacon stayed golden. In finishing first in the one-meter springboard with a score of 352.30, Bacon not only won the event, but set a new Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center record in the process as well. Bacon was followed by Megan Phillip on the one-meter podium, as the Gopher freshman placed second with 299.35 points.

In the three-meter, it was Bacon at the top yet again. The two-time NCAA Champion made her senior day memorable by winning the event with a 370.20 score. Meanwhile, Phillip took home fourth with 312.45 points

Men | Gophers 153 – Hawkeyes 147

The Minnesota men earned their first victory of the meet by sweeping the podium in the 1000 freestyle, with Sawyer Grimes leading the way with a winning time of 9:06.74. Cameron Kelley and Chris Nagy secured second and third, touching with respective times of 9:14.19 and 9:16.68.

Having already swam the nation's fastest time of the season in the 100 breaststroke two weeks back, Max McHugh improved on his NCAA-best mark by winning the event in 50.55. Once again, McHugh swept the breaststroke events, taking first in the 200 breast with the fifth-fastest time in the nation (1:53.17). Eitan Yudashkin claimed third in the 200 breast behind McHugh, touching in 1:58.96.

In the 100 back, the Gophers claimed four of the top five spots, finishing two-three-four-five. Gavin Olson led the way with a second place finish (48.33), while Desmon Sachtjen (49.34), Tom Donker (49.48) and Casey Stowe (49.77) claimed third through fifth.
 
So far in his young career, freshman Kaiser Neverman is unbeaten in the 200 fly. Neverman won the event for the second meet in a row on Saturday, taking first with a time of 1:47.12 while fellow Gopher freshman William Christenson placed second (1:49.32).
 
As for the diving, results could not have turned out much better. The Gophers won the top four spots in both the one-meter and the three-meter, with Jake Butler claiming gold in both springboard events. In the one-meter, Butler totaled 379.55 points and was followed by Ryan Phillip (344.95), Maxim Royzen (322.05) and Duncan Lester (314.60), who finished second-though-fourth, respectively.

In the three-meter, Butler topped the competition with a whopping 412.50 points. Phillip took silver once again (350.45), while Lester (322.90) and Royzen (317.50) placed third and fourth.

Notable
Max McHugh improved on his nation-leading time in the 100 breaststroke by winning the event with an NCAA 'A' Cut time of 50.55 on Saturday. He later chipped in a victory in the 200 breast as well, winning with the nation's fifth-fastest time of the season (1:58.96)

Minnesota swept the top four spots on the podium in the men's one-meter and three-meter springboards, led by sophomore Jake Butler who finished first in both events.

Two-time NCAA Champion Sarah Bacon made her senior day memorable in the diving well, setting a new Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center record with a score of 352.30 in the women's one-meter. Bacon also won the three-meter with a score of 370.20.

The next time the Gophers take to the pool will be at the 2021 Big Ten Championships. Minnesota will be hosting the women's Big Ten Championships beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, while the men will head to Ohio St. on Tuesday, March 2 for the men's Big Ten Championships.

The divers will next see a competitive diving well when they head to West Lafayette, Ind. on Feb. 24 for the men's and women's diving portions of the Big Ten Championships.
