Gymnastics Opens Up Season with a 193.450 during Keystone Classic - Temple University Athletics

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple Owls gymnastics team split Friday's opening meet of the season against #29 Penn State and Penn at McGonigle Hall part of the Keystone Classic. The Cherry and White improved by 1.05 points from last season's opener as they defeated the Quakers 193.450 to 191.300, but fell to the Nittany Lions who came away with the meet victory with a score of 194.450.
 
Meet Notes
> The Owls' had the top team marks on the floor and beam 48.725 and 48.500, respectively.
> Four freshmen gymnasts earned lineup spots, making their Owls debut.
> Freshman Hannah Stallings picked up an all-around victory in her first meet of her career, defeating a pair of PSU gymnasts with the score of 38.900.
> Temple sophomore Brooke Donabedian and Stallings tied for first-place on the balance beam with a 9.8.
> Veterans Faith Leary, Julianna Roland, and Tori Edwards tied for second on the floor exercise with a 9.775.
 
Vault
> Temple led off the meet on vault, scoring a solid 48.550. The Owls had five scores of 9.7 or better.
> Freshmen Anna Hill and Stalling each tallied 9.725's.
> Senior Ariana Castrence, Edwards, and Roland scored matching 9.7's in the rotation.
 
Bars
> TU scored a 47.675 as a team, while Castrence picked up her 15th score of 9.8 or better in her career.
> A late insert into the beam lineup, Cyrena Whalen had the second-highest Owl mark with 9.7.
 
Beam
> Stallings added her first career mark of 9.8 on the event, while Donebedian racked of seventh 9.8 or better in her career in the event.
> Freshman Summer Ruskey got a taste of first her action in the Cherry and White leo with a 9.65.
 
Floor
> The Owls closed the overall score deficit on the final rotation with a team score of 48.725.
> Again it was the veterans trio of Roland, Edwards, and Leary had matching 9.775 marks.
> Stallings finished the all-around competition in floor event with a strong score of 9.725.
> Donabedian also flourished on the final event with a 9.675.

> Temple returns to action Jan. 15 at the Chows Winter Classic in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET.
