CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The National Hot Rod Association is one week away from kicking off their season, which means Joe and Cathi Maynard’s dream has finally come full circle.

In July 2022, the Maynards became majority owners of an NHRA racing team after negotiating to expand their partnership with Don Schumacher Racing.

After the two sides came to terms, the Maynards went on to form JCM Racing. Since then, the Clarksville couple have gone on to expand their racing operations. During 2023, the Maynards became co-owners of Tim Wilkerson’s Funny Car operation.

How the Maynards’ dream began

“What got us started was my wife’s need for speed,” said Joe Maynard, joking. “No, but the real story is that over a decade ago we were at Bristol, and I finally talked my wife into going to a race.

“We got there and I heard a Top-Fuel car light off at the starting line, so she was able to get out of our van and get over to the finish line just as Tony Schumacher finished the race. He was going around 330 mph, and after she saw that, she came back up and told me she wanted one,” said Joe.

“We made it our goal over the next 10 years to get one, and we started out as sponsors, then as time went by an opportunity with Don Schumacher arose, who was interested in not being full-time in the sport anymore. Since we were interested in being in the sport, we went from being a sponsor to an owner in a year and a half.”

Expectations for 2023-24

Maynard said he’s been clear about his expectations for his team ahead of the 2023-24 season.

JCM Racing has a goal of winning two rounds per race on average for each team. Maynard added that each team has set a goal of winning four races during the season ahead.

“Whether it happens or not, there is a little bit of luck involved,” Maynard said. “You just never know, but our drivers are excellent, our crew chiefs are excellent, and we feel like we have strong enough teams to reach the ultimate goal of finishing Top 3 in points before the season concludes.”

On the financial side of things, the Maynards said they aren’t in the sport for the money. They are simply aiming to break even each year as JCM Racing grows within the NHRA.

What’s next

The NHRA season kicks off during the weekend of Friday, March 9.

Teams from around the league will travel to Gainsville, Florida, to compete in the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals event. This will be the first of 21 racing events during the year.
