Raiders, QB Jimmy Garoppolo agree to 3-year deal: Sources

The Raiders and former 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a contract worth $67.5 million over three years, including about $45 million guaranteed, league and team sources told The Athletic. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Garoppolo has spent the past six seasons with San Francisco after backing up Tom Brady for three seasons in New England. The 31-year-old has a 40-17 record as a starter.
  • Earlier Monday, Jarrett Stidham, who started the final two games of the regular season for Las Vegas, agreed to a two-year deal with Denver, a league source told The Athletic.
  • Since 2017, the 49ers have at least reached the NFC Championship Game every season that Garoppolo has played in at least seven games.

Commanders free-agency news, updates, analysis

NFL free agency is officially underway, as the legal tampering window opened Monday, and players and teams have begun reaching agreements. That includes the Washington Commanders, who are emphasizing one of their biggest needs by targeting offensive linemen.

Of course, Washington already made headlines just hours before free agency by reaching an agreement on a mammoth new deal for Daron Payne on Sunday. That move opened up an additional $9 million under the salary cap in 2023.

Other Commanders free agents to keep an eye on are linebacker Cole Holcomb, quarterback Taylor Heinicke and defensive lineman Efe Obada.

What will Panthers do at WR after losing DJ Moore?

At 5:34 p.m. on Friday — happy hour in the East — Panthers receiver D.J. Moore tweeted out side-by-side emojis of what Twitter describes as “face screaming in fear.”

A lot of Panthers’ fans probably had the same reaction when they looked at the Panthers’ wide receiver depth chart following Friday’s blockbuster trade that sent Moore and four draft picks — two firsts and two seconds — to Chicago in exchange for the No. 1 pick in next month’s NFL Draft.

As they did in 2011 with Cam Newton, the Panthers plan to use the first overall selection on a quarterback from the group of C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Will Levis and Anthony Richardson. The task for general manager Scott Fitterer now becomes finding a No. 1 receiver for that rookie quarterback to throw to with Moore headed to Chicago.

Heading the wideout depth chart currently are Terrace Marshall Jr., Laviska Shenault and Shi Smith, who had 28, 27 and 22 receptions last season, respectively.

With limited cap space and an underwhelming group of free-agent receivers, Fitterer will have to get creative in building out the receiving room. The Athletic looks at how he might do it.

Dolphins continue to add to their loaded defense with LB David Long

David Long signs a surprisingly modest deal (two-years $11 million) with the Dolphins. Long was my favorite linebacker in free agency. He's only 26. He's rangy, can plug up holes, and covers well (11 PDs in the last two seasons). He has has an injury history though and has yet to play a full season (didn't start in his first two seasons). He'll join defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on a defense that already looks like it'll already be a much stronger unit.

Aside from adding Fangio, the Dolphins traded for Jalen Ramsey on a defense that has Christian WIlkins, Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, and Xavier Howard.

Seahawks free-agency news, updates, analysis

The Seahawks can negotiate with players, as the legal tampering window officially opened Monday. NFL free agency officially opens at the start of the new league year on Wednesday.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider tend to prioritize re-signing their own players instead of spending big on outside free agents. In a KIRO-AM radio interview on March 7, Carroll confirmed this would continue to be their approach.

“We don’t want to be frenzied entering this first week of free agency because that’s where you can make huge mistakes,” he said.

The Seahawks have 18 unrestricted free agents after releasing linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven, who hasn’t yet recovered from an ACL tear suffered in the 2021 preseason.

Geno Smith, Seahawks — with contract now signed — turn attention to greater goals

Geno Smith has never bought into the storybook nature of his journey. Every question he’s been asked about feeling validated by the success of his 2022 season has been met with either a hard “no” or deeper perspective about just being fortunate enough to play football at the highest level for 10 years with seven-figure annual salaries along the way.

So, even as the Seattle quarterback sat between coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider on Thursday morning at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center after signing a three-year, $105 million contract, he focused on the future far more than the past.

“I hate when people look at my story and say, ‘You went from this to that.’ I was in the league with the best players for 10 years, amongst some of the best coaches, getting paid good money, and I’ve always done well by it,” Smith said. “I’ve always appreciated just the opportunity — I know how valuable that is.”

What will Vonn Bell bring to the Panthers?

The Panthers’ biggest need might be wide receiver, but they started off the legal tampering period by agreeing to terms with a pair of defensive players.

After kicking things off Monday with former Saints defensive tackle Shy Tuttle, the Panthers later reached an agreement with safety Vonn Bell, according to two league sources briefed on the transaction but not authorized to talk about it. The 28-year-old Bell, himself an ex-Saint, has spent the past three seasons in Cincinnati, where he was a defensive captain and one of the catalysts during the Bengals’ Super Bowl season of 2021.

Bell, ranked No. 26 on The Athletic’s list of the top free agents, could be the first of two Bengals’ safeties to leave Cincinnati. Jessie Bates III is third on the same list.

Steelers free-agency news, grades, analysis: Patrick Peterson to replace Cam Sutton

Omar Khan has been on the job for nearly a year now and has gone through almost the entire process of being a first-time general manager. Only a couple of things left to be checked off — the draft, the end of April and free agency, which opened Monday with the legal tampering period.

While Khan and his right-hand man, assistant general manager Andy Weidl, have gone through this process before, it hasn’t been by making the final call. Although it’s not expected for the Steelers to approach free agency anywhere near how they did last year, nobody honestly knows until they go through it.

The Steelers spent $84.7 million on outside free agents in a week and approximately $140.5 million when you include re-signing their own players. This is from a team that prides itself on drafting, developing and re-signing its own while using the free-agent market to supplement the roster when applicable.

49ers’ O-line needs work in free agency even with Colton McKivitz back

The NFL’s legal tampering window opens Monday morning. The new league year — when free agents can officially sign with new teams — begins Wednesday.

We’ve tinkered with different possible permutations of the 49ers’ roster. You can play financial Tetris and build out a team that fits under the salary cap, too. Soon, we’ll get to see how John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan handle the challenge of maintaining or even improving a strong roster with finite resources.

The 49ers’ biggest needs appear to be in the trenches. Playoff tests against the Eagles and Cowboys, who featured the two best pass rushes in football last season, highlighted the need for continual investment in the O-line and particularly pass protection. On the other side, the 49ers’ declining sack and pressure rates — even despite a career year from star defensive end Nick Bosa — underscored a pressing need to restock the D-line.

Let’s base our focus on the offensive line.
