A tourist died on Friday after falling approximately 70 feet off a cliff in New York's Minnewaska State Park.
Nur Aisyah Binte MD Akbar had been hiking on Beacon Hill Trail with her husband, Abdul Rauf Bin Mohd Said, when they stopped to take photos at the cliff's edge, and she lost her footing, the New York State Police said in a press release.
The department said that her husband, 41, called 911, and troopers from State Police Ellenville were dispatched to the area at approximately 1:06 pm. The NYS Park Police, Park Operations Staff, and NYS DEC Forest Rangers also responded to the scene along with "various Fire and EMT personnel."
According to the press release, the New York State Police Aviation helped hoist Binte MD Akbar, 39, out of the area, and she was transported to Ellenville Regional Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
While the incident remains under investigation, Bin Mohd Said shared his recollection of what happened in a lengthy Facebook post that included a video from their hike.
"Right after Ais fell off the cliff, I rushed forward, slipped, but didn't fall off the cliff. (Believe me, I wished it had been me). I screamed for help at the top of my lungs, and three sisters, who heard my cries, rushed over to my spot with their father and aunt," he wrote in his post.
Bin Mohd Said wrote that he used his phone camera to zoom in on where his wife had fallen as the three sisters approached her. According to Bin Mohd Said, Binte MD Akbar was still breathing when they arrived.
"The sisters said Ais told them her name, that she had two dogs, and that she really wanted to drink sweet tea. One of the rangers that was with her told me the same thing. And she was repeatedly saying thank you to them," he wrote.
Bin Mohd Said explained that it took nearly three hours to evacuate Binte MD Akbar, given that authorities needed to cut some trees down to make room for the helicopter.
"From the time she fell until the time she got into an ambulance, it was that long, but I didn't notice the time pass at all then. When she was eventually evacuated, the paramedics informed me she was not breathing anymore, and I broke down. We rushed to the nearest hospital, where it was confirmed that she didn't survive and had passed away," Bin Mohd Said wrote.
In another post on Facebook, Bin Mohd Said shared that he and his wife were at the park to "look back and reflect on the year."

"The beauty of Minnewaska State Park Reserve is amazing beyond my comprehension. You need to see it to appreciate it. We found a nice part of the park to sit down, take pictures, and discuss our next goals," he wrote.
