THE RUNDOWN
HOCKLEY, Texas – Baylor men's golf punched its ticket to the title match by recording a pair of 4-2 victories over Oklahoma and West Virginia on Saturday at the Big 12 Match Play Championship. With the victories, Baylor improved to 3-0 and clinched the top spot in Pool A, setting up Sunday afternoon's title match against Oklahoma State.

First, the Bears will take on Iowa State on Sunday morning. Two years ago, BU had already clinched a title match spot heading into the final day, but the Bears still won both matches on Sunday to finish with a perfect 5-0 record.

Baylor started Saturday off with a come-from-behind victory against Oklahoma. OU put the first two points on the board with Logan McAllister's 4&3 win over Ryan Grider and Patrick Welch's 4&2 win over Colin Kober. The Bears rebounded to win the final four matches and claim the victory.

Cooper Dossey got the Bears' first point with a 3&2 victory over Quade Cummins, avenging one of his two career match play defeats. After winning both matches on Saturday, Dossey is now 11-2-1 in his collegiate match play career, with both losses coming 1-up.

The final three matches came down to the wire, but Johnny Keefer, Brandon Hoff and Trey Bosco all claimed 1-up victories. Keefer was all-square going to his final hole, and he nearly drove the green on the par-4 first hole, setting up a birdie to win 1-up over Jonathan Brightwell

Bosco and Hoff were playing together, and both took a 1-up lead to the final hole, with the Bears needing one to hold on to win to secure the team victory. Hoff trailed the majority of the way in his match against Garett Reband, falling 3-down with seven holes remaining. Hoff answered by winning the 12th, 14th and 16th holes to bring the match all-square, then won again on the 17th hole and halved the final hole to claim a 1-up win

Bosco never trailed in his match against Trevor Johnson, jumping out to a 3-up lead thru 11 holes. Johnson won the 12th hole to cut Bosco's lead to 2-up, and he won again on the 17th hole by holing out for eagle to cut it to 1-up with one to play. But Bosco made par to halve the final hole and finish off the 1-up victory.

BU had an hour-long break before returning to the course to take on West Virginia. The Bears needed a win over WVU and for TCU to halve or win against Iowa State to clinch a spot in the title match.

The Bears got the first two points on the board when Dossey defeated Mark Goetz 5&4 and Keefer knocked off Luke Perkins 4&3. WVU answered with two points of its own when Kurtis Grant defeated Bosco 3&1 and Olivier Menard won 4&2 over Hoff. BU clinched at least a halve in the match when Kober gave the Bears their third point with a 3&2 victory over Will Stakel, leading only Grider's match against Jackson Davenport on the course.

Grider fell behind early and didn't lead the match until after the final hole. Davenport took a 2-up lead after eight holes, and after Grider won the ninth hole, Davenport rebuilt the lead back to 2-up with a win on the 11th hole. Grider answered by winning the 12th hole and brought the match back all-square with a win on the 15th hole, but Davenport regained a 1-up lead by taking the 16th hole.

Grider then drove the green in two on the par-5 No 8, and Davenport conceded after his par attempt missed the green, bringing the match all-square thru 17 holes. Needing to halve the final hole to secure the necessary half point for Baylor to win the match, Grider stepped to the tee on the par-3 No. 9 and dropped the ball four feet from the pin to set up a match-winning birdie.
