The two top-five programs put their rivalry aside to take a stand against racial inequality and social injustice during the ACC Unity Week.
"It was awesome to be able to set aside the rivalry and combine our social media forces in an effort to combat a problem that is bigger than sports," said senior defender Remi Swartz.
Both teams believe it is critical to speak up on the topic of inequality.
"It means a lot to me that we can all come together and overlook the rivalry and sports as a whole to acknowledge social injustices that are seen in this country," commented Duke redshirt senior Mia Gyau. "I think we are really lucky to have the platform that we do to share that Duke women's soccer values equality and unity."
Earlier this fall, the Duke volleyball team joined forces with North Carolina's volleyball team to create a similar initiative named "Bigger than Blue," taking a stand against racial inequality.
"I think my team has done a great job on educating ourselves and opening up a dialogue on the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement amongst each other," added senior defender Taylor Mitchell. "However, I think it was even better in working together with North Carolina to use our different platforms and voices to encourage our respective fans in joining us in this conversation. It's great that although we are rivals on the field, we can put down our differences and stand for something much greater than soccer."
Going forward, both Duke and North Carolina have committed to educate themselves to create inclusive environments, while helping to eradicate racism.
