LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 1 University of Kentucky rifle team began its season in impressive fashion Saturday as they posted a 4715-4684 victory over No. 5 Akron in a virtual match where the two teams both shot from their home range but were connected electronically.

In its first action of the season, the Wildcats performed well in both smallbore and air rifle, defeating the Zips in both disciplines. UK scored a 2347 in smallbore and 2368 in air rifle to earn the first win of the season, which will count towards Great America Rifle Conference but not NCAA qualifying.

"Overall, I think this was a good start for our team," said UK head coach Harry Mullins. We had some really good things like Mary's 596 in smallbore and Will's 597 in air rifle. Richard also had a good day in smallbore. I feel that as a team we are moving in the right direction. A 2347 in smallbore is a good start and we can definitely improve on our air rifle numbers. The team is working really hard and I feel that if we stay the course we will keep moving in the right direction. Now it is time to get right back to the training we have been doing to get the number we are looking for."

Sophomore Mary Tucker performed well for the Wildcats, posting the highest smallbore score of the match at 596. The strong smallbore score was a career-high mark for Tucker, who was the national shooter and national freshman of the year last season. Tucker completed the match with a 594 in air rifle and secured the top overall performer title for the match with an 1190 aggregate.

Junior Will Shaner was impressive in the season opener, scoring a match-best 597 in air rifle and 586 in smallbore. Fellow junior Richard Clark scored a 587 in both disciplines, which tied his career best smallbore score. Sophomore Mason Hamilton had a career performer in smallbore with a 578 and followed with a strong air rifle of 584, while fellow sophomore Jaden Thompson scored a 578 in smallbore and 588 in air rifle.

Senior Hailee Sigmon was in both lineups Saturday and scored a 577 in smallbore and 585 in air rifle, while sophomore Emmie Sellers scored a career-best 576 in smallbore and followed with a strong 589 in air rifle. Junior Mitchell Nelson posted a 572 in smallbore and 582 in air rifle, while senior Mason Joachim earned a 564 in smallbore and 577 in air rifle.

Akron entered the match having defeated No. 15 Morehead State last week in a virtual match. The Zips scored a 2317 in smallbore and 2367 in air rifle for an overall score of 4684. Wyatt Openshaw was the team's leader in smallbore with a 590, while Gavin Perkowski led in air rifle with a 594.

The Wildcats will return to action next weekend when they play host to Morehead State inside the Barker Hall Rifle Range while they will also virtually compete against Army. The match is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. ET and live targets will be available online at UKathletics.com.
