SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team battled its way to a 76-66 road win over Notre Dame on Thursday night (Dec. 3) at Purcell Pavilion.
The Wolverines secured just their second win at Notre Dame (1-2), and first in South bend since 1979, using double-digit scoring efforts from four different players. Junior Naz Hillmon recorded her third straight 20-plus-point performance, knocking down a career-best 12 free throws and securing her second double-double of the season with a team-high 11 rebounds. Senior Hailey Brown scored 18 points, making three three-pointers.
Junior Leigha Brown added 14 points and five rebounds, while senior Akienreh Johnson scored 12 points. Junior Amy Dilk dished out a team-best seven assists and Maddie Nolan made two big three-pointers for Michigan (3-0) off the bench.
Made free throws were a key contributor in the win as U-M made 17 of 19 from the charity stripe, with Hillmon going 12-for-13 from the line and Leigha Brown making four of her five attempts.
Defensively, U-M blocked eight shots with Hailey Brown rejecting four and Hillmon blocking three Fighting Irish attempts. The Wolverines forced 15 Notre Dame turnovers, turning them into six points.
The Fighting Irish were the first to strike before the Wolverines hit four straight shots to stay just four points down, 12-8, with just under five minutes to play in the first quarter. Both teams struggled to get their offenses going, with Michigan going scoreless over four and a half minutes, but trailed, 15-12, after one quarter.
Nolan opened the second quarter with a triple before Hillmon followed it up with an and-one play on the ensuing possession to bring Michigan within one at 19-18. Back-to-back scores from Dilk and Hailey Brown would give Michigan a slight three-point advantage, 28-25, heading into the media break.
U-M went on a 9-0 run and stopped the Notre Dame offense for over four and a half minutes to extend its lead to 33-25, but the Fighting Irish responded to halt the Michigan offense for 2:21, closing the gap to 36-34 at the halftime break.
Hillmon led the Wolverines with 11 points and six rebounds in the first 20 minutes, while Hailey Brown added 10 points.
Out of the break, Leigha Brown blocked an Irish shot and Hailey Brown made a three-pointer on the opposite end of the court to give the Wolverines a 39-34 advantage. The two teams continued to exchange baskets before Hailey Brown hit her third clutch three-pointer and pushed the Michigan lead to four, 52-48, with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Michigan maintained its lead heading into the final 10 minutes before Nolan hit her second triple of the game to extend the Michigan advantage to eight, 63-55, and fored a Notre Dame timeout with seven minutes to play.
Coming out of the final media timeout, Johnson knocked down a huge three-pointer from the top of the arc to give Michigan an 11-point lead, 71-60, with just under four minutes to play.
The Wolverines held off the Fighting Irish in the closing minutes to lock up their road win.
U-M will return to Crisler Center on Sunday (Dec. 6) when the Wolverines host Wright State. The game is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start, and the game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
