It was just another tumultuous day for the Husky men's basketball program as Nate Pryor and J'Raan Brooks entered the transfer portal while Garfield alum and Seattle/Arizona transfer Terrell Brown Jr. exited it by committing to Washington.
Brooks continues his string of college indecision with the move to the portal. In high school he committed to USC, then St. John's, then back to USC. After a single year in Los Angeles he returned back home to UW and redshirted due to transfer rules. This past year Brooks averaged 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds for the Huskies but couldn’t crack the rotation because of his defensive liabilities.
Pryor became the 3rd guard in 3 days to depart UW after averaging 4.1 points and 1.6 assists per game for the Huskies in his lone season in Seattle. Pryor committed to Washington in high school but failed to qualify and ended up at North Idaho College. He finally got to campus this past season but apparently will not finish his career with the Huskies.
It's an unfortunate turn of events for a player who waited 3 years to make good on his commitment to the Huskies. He deserves the thanks of Husky nation for that determination even if things didn't work out this season.
Meanwhile, it's Terrell Brown's turn to come back home. The Seattle native started at Shoreline Community College for a year before enrolling at Seattle University. He became an instant star there and averaged 14.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game as a sophomore. Then in his 2nd season with the Redhawks he took his scoring up a level and finished with 20.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game as one of the highest usage players in the country.
Brown decided to transfer to Arizona for this past season and was willing to downshift to a more supporting role to try to win. His numbers came way down at 7.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game but while averaging fewer than 1 turnover per game.
With almost literally every single guard departing from the Husky roster he will presumably have a chance to go back to his high usage ways. Brown isn't a great shooter (32.6% career 3pt) but he's great at limiting turnovers especially for someone who has the ball in his hands as much as he does.
Brown was listed at 6’3 by Arizona but was listed as 6’1 while at Seattle. Since it’s unlikely he grew 2 inches at the age of 21 I think we consider him to be closer to 6’1. The Husky zone can survive with one undersized player up front but had troubles this year when it was Quade Green plus one of Marcus Tsohonis or Erik Stevenson up front.
There will clearly be more additions at the guard spots via the transfer portal (or else they won't be able to field a team) but it seems likely that Brown Jr will be the starting point guard when the Huskies tip off next fall. With his 1 year at Shoreline CC, Brown has played 4 years of college basketball but will have 1 year of eligibility remaining thanks to the mulligan rule from this past season.
