NACOGDOCHES, Texas: The University of Central Arkansas rebounded in strong fashion as they dominated Stephen F. Austin 6-1.
The Bears finished out their short Texas road trip with a quality victory over Stephen F. Austin
Doubles:
The Bears began the doubles play on a positive note this time, as they got off to a quick 2-0 start. The duos of sophomores Chunxi Xin and Fuka Nonoyama and the pairing of freshmen Maja Gledic and Sumomo Hamanaga both got off to a hot start early. The No. 1 squad of Xin and Nonoyama began the onslaught today as they got the ball rolling with an early 6-3 victory. Gledic and Hamanaga followed shortly after with their own 6-3 win to give the Bears the crucial doubles point.
Singles:
The LadyJacks could only claim one point against the Bears in the singles section as they claimed the No. 2 spot. However, it was the power of the last four spots and Xin at the one that granted UCA a dominant showing. Xin may not have been the first to finish, but she proved her ability to stay in a match as she came back down 1-0. Xin finished out the match by winning the last two sets as she claimed the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Xin was one of the last to finish, so before she propelled a stellar comeback, the rest of the squad did their work. Junior Yada Vasupongchai dominated 6-4, 6-3, while freshman Jaeun Lee battled to the same beat with a 6-2,6-1 victory. Following that was another excellent performance from fellow freshman Hamanaga. Hamanaga claimed hers in two sets as well 6-4, 7-5. Lastly, the Bears were able to get one more after already declaring the match. Gledic finished her day with another victory as she won it 7-6, 6-3.
Up next, the Bears faceoff against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. Thursday in Tyler, Texas.
Quote from head coach Casey Wharton:
"SFA is a good team and we knew going to their place was going to be difficult. We decided to mix up the doubles teams and start some new teams today, and it worked out cause we got the doubles point. Going into singles we did have to carry energy and motivation cause the wind was really blowing. We just had to be patient and positive and wait for our opportunities. We got some really good wins and the score was really close. The match was very close even though the overall score may not show that. I was very proud of how everyone played. We are on our way back and will rest at home and then play Corpus on Thursday."
