HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Ohio Dominican baseball team split its series finale doubleheader at Hillsdale Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2 before taking the second half of the twin bill, 9-5.
Ohio Dominican concludes its first weekend of Great Midwest play 2-2, improving the Panthers to 10-2 overall this spring. Hillsdale is 6-6 overall after the completion of the four-game set.
BOX SCORE NOTES
- ODU posted nine of its 12 hits in the second game Sunday, where they outhit the Chargers by two.
- Sophomore Alex Brill (Amherst, Ohio) went 3-for-5 on the day.
- Brill, classmate Brennen Hunt (Ashland, Ohio) and junior Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) each scored three runs over the doubleheader to lead the team.
- Joining Brill and Hunt with multiple hits on the day were sophomore Derek Kutrubs (Brunswick, Ohio) and freshman Lane Marshall (Wooster, Ohio).
- Freshman Michael Lesiecki (Uhrichsville, Ohio) recorded his first collegiate victory, going 6.0 innings in Game Two, allowing three runs while striking out four.
- Redshirt freshman Tyler Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) struck out both batters he faced in Game One, giving him 14 strikeouts over six relief appearances this season.
GAME ONE
- ODU was held to just three hits in the opener, but back-to-back singles from Hunt and Brill scored Staab in the top of the first inning to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
- Sophomore Grayson Hamilton (Lebanon, Ohio) started on the mound for ODU, conceding just three hits and no runs over the first five innings of play.
- Hamilton retired the Chargers in order in the second, fourth and fifth frames.
- Three of the first four batters reached in the top of the sixth for the Panthers and Staab would score on a throwing error from HC to give ODU a 2-0 lead.
- The Chargers though, registered four hits and took advantage of an ODU error in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
- Ohio Dominican could only muster one base hit in the seventh and final inning to fall 3-2.
GAME TWO
- For the eighth time in 12 games, the Black & Gold got its offense started early with a run in the first inning.
- After being hit by a pitch, Hunt would later score on a passed ball.
- A four-run third inning was highlighted by a RBI base hit from Kutrubs. The Panthers loaded the bases in the inning and led 5-2 after three complete.
- ODU added four more runs over the fifth and sixth innings to capture a 9-3 advantage with one inning to play. Kutrubs, graduate senior Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) and sophomore David Silva (Tontogany, Ohio) all drove in runs late for the Panthers.
- Despite the Chargers scoring twice in the final frame, Brill struck out three batters to secure the 9-5 win for ODU.
UP NEXT
- Ohio Dominican will welcome Kentucky Wesleyan for its home opening series next weekend.
- The four-game battle of the Panthers is set to begin with a nine-inning game at 3 p.m., Friday, March 19.
