Improving the team through recruiting is the top priority for Jeff Capel and his staff now that the off-season has officially started for Pitt.
Pitt will be looking to add players at every position and will be recruiting various grade levels, although filling the four current open scholarships will be the top priority.
One of the players that the Pitt coaches are speaking to is actually someone they’ve been in communication with for quite sometime.
2022 forward Fray Nguimbi is a 6’9″ forward from First Love Christian Academy (Washington, PA). Pitt first extended Nguimbi an offer back in September and since then, the entire coaching staff has conducted zoom calls with him. Along with Pitt, the 3-star forward has also received offers from Oklahoma State, St. John’s, TCU, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Rutgers, Dayton, Iowa State, Alabama and South Florida.
Pitt’s sincere interest in this talented forward has continued as Nguimbi told Pittsburgh Sports Now when we spoke earlier this week.
“We talk three times a week,” Nguimbi tells Pittsburgh Sports Now. “Coach Jason (Capel) and I talk and text. They also tell me how much they need me and really want me to be a part of the program. For him and Coach Capel to talk to me that much really means a lot to me. By them telling me all this and hearing from them so much really makes me want to do better. I think Coach Jason is a really cool guy, I like him.”

Nguimbi said that the Pitt staff believes that he can play any of the two through five positions on the court.
“I believe my biggest strength is that I attack the basket a lot. I also play good defense and block shots. Right now, I’m working a lot on my shot and my ball handling.”

“Coach was telling me that I can come here and be free on the court and we’ll let you play your game and play to your strengths,” Nguimbi said. “He told me that I’m not just a big man because I know most people and teams think I’m that because I’m 6-foot-8 or 6-foot 9, but Coach Capel said I’m not just a big man and that I can go there and do my thing.”
Nguimbi tells PSN that he isn’t a candidate to re-classify and will be a member of the Class of 2022. Aside from Pitt, Nguimbi tells us that he’s also hearing a lot from Georgia Tech, Memphis, South Florida and Missouri.
