- Mobile Farmers Market Provides Discounted Food Essentials for Low-Income Families: Fresh Approach’s Mobile Farmers’ Market offers a 50% discount to low-income customers that receive federal benefits such as CalFresh, WIC, SSI/SSDI, MediCal, and now to customers who receive unemployment benefits. In response to the pandemic, Fresh Approach expanded their food distribution by partnering with local farms and community-based organizations such as Veggielution and OffTheGrid to form emergency food hubs to distribute Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes to low-income residents. Currently, the Mobile Famers’ Market can be found Tuesdays at Troy Apartments at 714 S Almaden Ave., San José from noon to 3 p.m. For more Fresh Approach resources, email: mobilemarket@freshapproach.org.
- Emergency Rent Relief Now Available: The State has launched its CA COVID-19 Rent Relief Program, which helps low-income Californians through the payment of unpaid rent to landlords. Participating landlords can get reimbursed for 80% of each eligible tenant’s unpaid rent that accumulated between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, if the landlord agrees to waive the remaining 20% of unpaid rent from that time period. Eligible renters whose landlords choose not to participate may still apply on their own and receive 25% of unpaid rent that accumulated between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021. For details about eligibility, rules, and deadlines, and to submit applications for the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief Program, landlords and tenants can visit the State’s Housing is Key website.
- All Three Vaccines Available are Safe and Effective: With COVID-19 continuing to circulate, the medical advice is this: the best vaccine is the one you can get the soonest. Bay Area health officers released a statement that all three vaccines available for COVID-19 are safe and have been shown to be highly effective at preventing illness, hospitalization, and death. There is also growing evidence that people who have been vaccinated by any of the three vaccines are unlikely to spread COVID-19 to others who are not vaccinated. The three vaccines have been carefully studied with different groups of people at different phases in the pandemic, and it has been confirmed that all three offer a high level of protection. You can learn more about vaccines on the state’s COVID-19 website.
- Vaccine Supply and Eligibility Update: Due to lower than expected vaccine allocation from the State, Santa Clara County Health and Hospital System has no new vaccine appointments available at the current time. Please check sccfreevax.org regularly for updates as new appointments will be added when vaccine supply becomes available.
If you are a member of one of the groups below, you may be able to make your vaccine appointment through your healthcare provider. Note: Your provider may or may not yet be vaccinating all eligible groups, depending on their supply of vaccine.
As of March 15, the following people will be eligible to receive vaccines in Santa Clara County:
- Santa Clara County residents age 65+
- Individuals age 16-64 with high-risk conditions including: cancer, chronic kidney disease (stage 4 or above), chronic pulmonary disease (oxygen dependent), Down syndrome, solid organ transplant (with weakened immune system), pregnancy, sickle cell disease, heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies (but not hypertension), severe obesity (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2), and type 2 diabetes mellitus with A1c > 7.5%. Note: This list is subject to change in the coming weeks.
- Workers in food and agriculture: Workers in groceries, pharmacies, convenience stores, and other retail that sells food and/or beverages; restaurant workers, caterers, and food delivery drivers; and farmers, farm and ranch workers, and agribusiness support services.
- Workers in education and childcare: Workers of public and private childcare establishments (including daycares), pre-K establishments, K-12 schools, colleges, and universities.
- Emergency services workers (who cannot practically work from home): Workers in a variety of public safety, disaster response, security, protective services, and animal control functions listed in the state’s Emergency Services Sector Index.
- Public transit workers: Workers in public transit including airport and commercial airline workers.
- Workers and residents in high-risk group residential setting: Individuals who live or work in a group residential setting such as an incarceration/detention facility, homeless shelter, or behavioral health facility.
- Today - Learn More About COVID-19 Vaccines: The Santa Clara County Health Department is hosting a virtual session where community members can ask County officials questions directly about COVID-19 vaccines. The forum will take place today, March 17, at 4 p.m. in English and at 7 p.m. in Spanish on YouTube and Facebook (English and Spanish).
- COVID-19 Black Regional Town Hall Event: California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris will be speaking at the second COVID-19 Black Regional Town Hall event on Thursday, March 25 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dr. Burke Harris joins an esteemed panel of African American doctors, public health representatives, and community leaders from all over the Bay Area to share information about the COVID-19 vaccine. - VTA Offers Free Rides to COVID Vaccination Sites: As Santa Clara County increases the number of COVID-19 vaccination locations, VTA can take you there, no fare required. Visit the VTA website for an interactive map of bus and light rail routes that can bring you to County vaccination sites, free of charge.
- Get Help with Quarantine or Isolating: The County offers support options for people who test positive or have been in contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive. If you need help with food, bills, or a place to stay while you isolate or quarantine, please call 408-808-7770 to learn about support services from the County of Santa Clara.
- Get Tested: If you need a COVID-19 test, don’t wait! A high rate of testing helps identify and stop the spread of COVID-19 cases, and is one of the factors that is helping our county reopen under State regulations. Some testing sites are listed below, but there are many more throughout the county. For a full list of COVID-19 testing sites in Santa Clara County, go to www.sccfreetest.org or call 2-1-1.
- Appointments Available for Testing in San José, Campbell, and Palo Alto: Getting tested for COVID-19 is convenient and easy. Appointments can be made at the rotating city-based sites a week in advance, and five days in advance at the ongoing Santa Clara County Fairgrounds operation - visit www.sccfreetest.org. Valley Medical Center testing sites can now provide automated results via text message – often as soon as the day after the test is administered.
