The YachtCollege Mariner: Beers, Bears and Battlestar Galactica - Sounder At Heart

Editor’s note: This is the third of a series that will chronicle YachtCollege.

One of the best things about college isn’t just learning about new skills, it’s exploring and expanding on existing interests. We think that’s the sweet spot for YachtCollege, and TDO 017: Creative Cocktailing is a wonderful example.

Led by resident cocktail nerd Dr. Matt Powell, Will Bruin and I learned to make three distinct drinks. The first was, admittedly, a bit complicated. It involved several steps that included a blender, a strainer and freshly brewed tea. We also got a nice bit of education on the origins of “punch” and the pleasures of extending whatever booze you may have on hand. The drink was called “Shut up, Alexi.”

We followed that up with a much easier concoction that was still quite interesting: a beer cocktail that was called “Beers, Bears and Battlestar Galactica” in honor of our student.

We closed out with something a bit more straightforward: an old-fashioned.

All three should provide you with the foundation on which you can build your own versions, and are sure to impress your friends once gatherings are again safe.

Here are the supplies you’ll need to follow along:

  • 1oz silver tequila
  • 1oz reposado tequila
  • 0.5oz ginger peppercorn syrup
  • 0.5oz lime juice
  • 1ml ancho reyes liquor
  • 6-8oz beer
  • 1oz Caribbean rum
  • 1oz Clairin
  • 0.5oz ginger peppercorn syrup
  • 0.5oz lime juice
  • 1mL allspice dram
  • 6-8oz chamomile tea
  • 1.5oz bourbon
  • 0.25 tsp simple syrup
  • 2-3 dashes bitters
  • Orange twist if you have one
