The Rundown
On Wofford's second drive, Rogers picked off Terriers quarterback Peyton Derrick at the Elon seven-yard line with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter. It was Rogers' third career interception. The Phoenix capitalized on the takeaway, marching 71 yards before settling for a 39-yard Skyler Davis field goal with 1:38 remaining in the quarter to score its first points of the season.
In the second quarter, the Terriers quickly answered with a 65-yard touchdown run from Irvin Mulligan to put Wofford ahead 7-3 at the 12:26 mark. After the teams traded punts, Elon quarterback Cheek started the team's next possession with a career-long 37-yard run. Two plays later, Weeks scored a 20-yard touchdown on a pass from Cheek to put the maroon and gold ahead 10-3 with 7:16 remaining in the quarter.
On the next play from scrimmage, Derrick hit receiver Landon Parker, who ran 71 yards to the Elon four-yard line. The Terriers capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run by Ryan Ingram to retake the lead 14-13 with 6:24 remaining of the second quarter. With the momentum in Wofford's favor, Amir Annoor picked off Cheek on the first play of the next Phoenix drive to set the Terriers up at Elon's 16-yard line. Wofford went up 21-10 two plays later thanks to a two-yard touchdown run by Nathan Walker at the 5:36 mark.
On the final drive of the second quarter, the Phoenix drove 66 yards in 11 plays to set up a 41-yard Davis field goal as time expired, trimming Wofford's halftime lead to 21-13.
After Elon went three-and-out on its opening drive of the third quarter, Rogers got the ball back for the Phoenix with his second interception of the game at the 12:02 mark, returning it 35 yards to set the team's offense up at Wofford's 17-yard line. Davis capped the drive with a 23-yard field goal with 9:24 left in the quarter to make the score 21-16.
After a Wofford punt, the Terriers forced a fumble on a Cheek scramble, recovering the ball at Elon's 25-yard line with 7:34 left in the quarter. The Terriers were unable to cash in on the takeaway, however, as Walker Gliarmis pulled a 26-yard field goal attempt wide right at the 5:52 mark. On the next Phoenix drive, Cheek hit Brayboy for a 37-yard touchdown strike with 2:31 remaining in the third to put Elon back in front 22-21, though the maroon and gold failed to convert on a two-point attempt to stretch its lead.
Wofford pulled back ahead 24-22 with a 26-yard Gliarmis field goal at the 10:15 mark of the fourth quarter, capping off a 14-play, 59-yard drive. After getting the ball back with 3:32 remaining, the maroon and gold were unable to pick up a first down, turning the ball over on downs at its own 26-yard line at the 2:01 mark.
With Wofford looking to run out the clock, Derrick fumbled when Cole Coleman stripped the ball at the one-yard line, recovering it in the endzone for a Phoenix touchback with 1:04 left in the game. Cheek went four for five on the Phoenix's final drive, finding Brayboy two times for 28 yards to set Elon up at Wofford's 29-yard line. With 18 seconds remaining, Davis missed a 46-yard field goal short and to the right to give the ball back to the Terriers, who took a knee to end the game.
