LOWELL, Mass. – Ahead of her inaugural season, UMass Lowell Softball Head Coach Jen Starek has completed her coaching staff with the addition of two assistant coaches. Brian Claypool and Brenna Martini, who both bring a wealth of knowledge and skills, will join the River Hawk program this year.

Claypool brings nearly 20 years of coaching experience at varying levels to UMass Lowell. Most recently he spent four seasons as the head softball coach at Rhode Island College of the Little East Conference. During his tenure, Claypool helped the program thrive offensively, ranking seventh in the nation in on-base percentage (.434), 10th in batting average (.357) and 16th in scoring offense (7.16 runs per game).

Previously, he served as head coach at The College of The Holy Cross from 2007-2016. In his first three seasons, the program increased its stolen bases from 11 in 2007 to 100 in 2010, good for a top 10 ranking nationally. Additionally, the team fielding percentage went from the lowest in the Patriot League to the highest by 2010.

He also held his program to high academic standards, as 90 Crusaders were honored with the All-Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recognition during his time on staff. Claypool's impact on his student-athletes earned him the title of Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2011.

Claypool played baseball at The College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio where he helped lead the 1997 team to a 48-6-1 season that culminated in a second place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships. He received his bachelor's degree in psychology from The College of Wooster before adding a master's in education at Springfield College.

He and his wife, Holly, have three sons Camden, Shane and Hunter.

Martini, a decorated softball player at Adelphi University joined the coaching staff at her alma mater in 2018. Her efforts helped the program to NE-10 Regular-Season Championships and NCAA Division II Regional appearances in 2019 and 2021. She coached ten All-Conference honorees, including the league's Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, in addition to a NFCA First-Team All-American.

She has also worked with the New York BlueFire Fastpitch Softball organization since 2018 as the head softball trainer, planning practices, analyzing player development and preparing student-athletes for collegiate play.

Martini finished her playing career at Adelphi in 2018 as the program's all-time leader in nearly all offensive categories, including batting average, home runs, RBI, doubles, walks, runs scored and total bases. Her accolades included Northeast-10 Conference Woman of the Year and Adelphi Female Athlete of the Year, in addition to being named the NE10 Player of the Year for three straight seasons, which was a historic accomplishment in the league. A three-time NFCA All-American, she led her team to back-to-back appearances at the Division II Women's College World Series in 2015 and 2016.

Martini is a two-time graduate of Adelphi, having earned a bachelor's degree in physical activity studies in 2018 before a master's degree in sport management in 2020.
