 LAST WEEK
The Broncos were on the road at Michigan State for the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational, dropping their first match to Michigan State 3-0 (15-25, 22-25, 29-31). Western Michigan rebounded from the tough loss with a pair of sweeps over Wright State (25-17, 25-22, 25-15) and Canisius (25-18, 25-12, 25-16).

 IT'S EARLY BUT…
Although the Broncos have only played in three matches they have already made a dent in the national stat rankings. WMU sits just outside the top 50 in the nation in kills per set, coming in at 56 with 13.67. Individually, Western Michigan has two student-athletes in the top 75 in blocks per set and points per set. Sammi LaBolle is 69th in blocks per set after averaging 1.43 last weekend, while Maggie King ranks 72nd in points per set at 4.50.

ALREADY EARNING HONORS
It only took one week for a Bronco to earn Mid-American Conference weekly honors. Sophomore Logan Case was named MAC West Setter of the Week after her performance at the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational. She played in five sets in the tournament, recording a double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs against MSU. She also had 24 sets in just two sets in the win over Wright State.

Maggie King and Abi Wilcoxson also earned honors with getting named to the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational All-Tournament Team.

SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
The Redhawks (3-0) roll into Kalamazoo coming off of a dominating performance in the CEFCU Invitational Championship last weekend, where they recorded three victories in two days.

After defeating DePaul 3-1 on Friday afternoon, the Redhawks continued their positive momentum Saturday with a couple of wins over Bradley, 3-1, and Central Michigan, 3-0. Three Redhawks finished with double-doubles during the win over DePaul, including junior outside hitter Zoey Beasley's career high 20 kills, senior setter Claire Ochs, who notched 48 assists and 20 digs, and Laney Malloy who added 16 digs and 10 kills.

SEMO's weekend was highlighted by Malloy's 42 kills, 33 digs, and 12 blocks, as well as a strong weekend from Ochs, who added a total of 123 assists, 46 digs, and 12 kills. Junior libero Tara Beilsmith, as well as Ochs and Malloy, were all named to the 2021 CEFCU Invitational All-Tournament Team. Malloy also received honors as tournament MVP.

SCOUTING THE HOOSIERS
Indiana (3-0) come into this weekend's tournament following an undefeated effort in the Top Dawg Challenge last weekend with wins over UIC, Bowling Green, and Butler.

Among the notable performances Friday in the 3-0 win over UIC were fifth year setter Brooke Westbeld, who led the Hoosiers with 12 digs, along with junior middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg, who finished with 12 points and nine kills.

Saturday was much of the same for the Hoosiers, where junior defensive specialists Paula Cerame led the team in digs for both outings, with 27 digs in the 3-2 win over Bowling Green, and 12 digs in the 3-0 win over Butler.

Senior hitter Kari Zumach, as well as Rammelsberg, were both named to the Top Dawg Challenge All-Tournament Team.

SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
Purdue Fort Wayne (0-3) travels to WMU coming off of a tough few outings in the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational Tournament, where it dropped three games throughout the course of the weekend.

Fifth year outside hitter Katie Crowe finished with a double-double in Friday's matchup with SIUE, recording 17 kills and 10 digs. She was accompanied by Madison Gates, who served up 30 assists and also added 12 digs to her team's cause.

Saturday yielded two more losses for the Mastodons. After being swept by Evansville, Purdue Fort Wayne dropped their night game in five sets to Kent State. Junior libero Rachel Crucis was the lone member of the team to represent the Mastodons in All-Tournament honors.

ON THE HORIZON
Non-conference Tourney time keeps on rolling for the Broncos. Western Michigan heads to Indiana State for the ISU Invitational next weekend. WMU will open with Austin Peay on Friday morning at 10 a.m. and then take on the host Sycamores later at 6 p.m. The Broncos wrap up the tournament against IUPUI on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
