PHILADELPHIA - The cross-town rivalry between Drexel and Saint Joseph's will be renewed on Wednesday night when the Dragons and the Hawks meet at Hagan Arena on Hawk Hill. The Hawks will be looking to avenge last season's loss to the Dragons in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The 2021-22 Drexel men's basketball season is presented by IBEW 98.

THE SERIES
The Hawks lead the Dragons, 48-10, in the all-time series which dates back more than 100 years. Drexel and Saint Joseph's first met in 1918, the first year Babe Ruth led the American League in home runs. Last season, Drexel edged Saint Joseph's in the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 81-77. James Butler had a big night for the Blue and Gold, scoring 21 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Ryan Daly led the Hawks with 30 points.

Prior to last season, the Hawks had won six games in a row against DU. Drexel's last win before the 2020-21 season came in 2010. The Dragons have yet to win a game on Hawk Hill since Hagan Arena underwent renovations. Their last win on Hawk Hill came back during the 1977-78 season. The Hawks have won nine straight against Drexel in the building.

ABOUT DREXEL
The Dragons enter the game with a 1-1 record after dropping a 75-60 decision at Syracuse on Sunday. Drexel led at the half by a point before Syracuse opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. Mate Okros led the Dragons with 16 points and drained four 3-pointers, Camren Wynter added 11 points for the Dragons, while Amari Williams chipped in with eight points and six rebounds. Earlier in the week, the Dragons defeated Neumann in the season-opener, 103-74.

The Dragons return three starters from a team that won the league title for the first time in 25 years. Drexel finished 12-8 despite playing just five games in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Wynter was named the CAA Preseason Player of the Year after averaging 16.3 point and 5.2 rebounds per game last year. He is fifth on Drexel's career assist list entering tonight's games. Butler, a graduate student, was also a CAA Preseason First Team All-CAA pick. Butler begins the day with 838 career rebounds, which is seventh on the school's career list. Drexel also has six other players returning that saw action in the postseason last year. Xavier Bell and Mate Okros split starting duties last year and both were key players in the Dragons' title run. Matey Juric has been named the team's top defensive player in each of his three seasons. Lamar Odom, Amari Williams and Luke House each made contributions in their first seasons with the team and will be expected to do more as the Dragons look to go back-to-back for the first time since Malik Rose and the 1996 team won three straight league titles. Coletrane Washington, who led the league in 3-point percentage two years ago, is back after returning from an injury.

Melik Martin and Tre Brown are two graduate transfers that should make an impact. Martin was a Third Team All-MAAC performer at Monmouth, while Brown graduated from Colorado State Pueblo after transferring from Coastal Carolina. Other new faces include freshmen Terrence Butler and Ata Atsuren and walk-on Dean Wang.

ABOUT THE HAWKS
Saint Joseph's is 2-0 with victories against the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Mount St. Mary's. Taylor Funk averages 20 points per game and is 10-for-18 from behind the arc. Ejike Obinna chips in with 14.5 points and leads the club with 10.5 rebounds. As a team, the Hawks shoot 45 percent from the floor and 41 percent from behind the arc.

WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel will head to the Bahamas this weekend. The Dragons will compete in the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship beginning Monday. Drexel opens up with a contest against Toledo and will then play either Tulane or Charlotte on Tuesday. The championship and consolation games are on Wednesday.
