Men's Basketball Starts GNAC Play At Home Against Alaska Fairbanks and Alaska Anchorage - WOU Athletics

MONMOUTH, Ore. – After spending the first month of the regular season on the road, the Western Oregon University men's basketball team will look forward to opening their home portion of the schedule and starting Great Northwest Athletic Conference play this week against both Alaska schools. The Wolves will face Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday starting at 7:30 p.m. and then will go against Alaska Anchorage on Saturday beginning at 4:15 p.m. inside New PE Gym.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be holding a food drive at the home games this week. All food and money donations will go directly to the Food Pantry here on campus. This organization not only supports students and faculty of WOU, but is open to anyone in the Monmouth/Independence community! Non-perishable food items and/or cash donations. Donate 5 cans or a $5 donation can get you a free popcorn.

WOU (1-6) played one game at home that was an exhibition clear back at the beginning of November when the Wolves hosted Linfield on Nov. 4. Since then, the Wolves traveled to California for five games and then played two this past weekend in Salt Lake City. WOU nearly came back to defeat Westminster in the final game of the week, falling just short (70-62). Earlier in the week, the Wolves faced Fort Lewis as the Skyhawks got off to a hot start and claimed the 89-63 victory.

WOU enters the week averaging 68.4 points, shooting 179-444 (40.3) from the field, 65-191 (34) from three and 56-79 (70.9) from the foul line. The Wolves also average 35.3 rebounds, 12.3 assists, 6.7 steals and 3.1 blocks per game. Opponents average 77 points, shooting 210-465 (45.2) from the field, 46-142 (32.4) from three and 73-105 (69.5) at the foul line. Opponents also average 41.7 rebounds, 12.9 assists, 6.9 steals and 1.4 blocks per game.

Cameron Cranston leads the Wolves in points per game (16.9), field goals (39), three-pointers (19), free throws (21), rebounds per game (6.1), assists (15), steals (10) and is second on the team in blocks (5). John Morrill-Keeler is second on the team in multiple categories including points per game (9.4), rebounds per game (5.7), field goals (27) and also adds four assists, four steals and four blocks. Tyreek Price is at 7.9 points per game, connecting on a second-best 15 three-pointers, seven assists and six steals. Daisone Hughes is right behind at 7.7 points per game, along with 10 assists and seven steals. Yosani Clay gives the Wolves five players averaging over seven points per game sitting at 7.4, making nine three-pointers, averaging 3.9 rebounds per game, dishing out 14 assists and is second on the team with eight steals. Elihu Cobb leads the team in blocks with seven, while adding 6.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

WOU ranks high as a team and in the top-three in the GNAC (through stats as of 11/28) in several categories including 69th nationally and second in the GNAC in three-point field goal defense, 51st nationally and second in the GNAC in three-point field goals per game, 40th nationally and second in the GNAC in total three-point field goals made, 98th nationally in total assists, 68th nationally in total blocks, 95th nationally in total rebounds and 69th nationally in total steals.

Individually, Cranston is 82nd nationally and leads the GNAC (through stats as of 11/28) in free throw percentage, 78th nationally and fifth in the GNAC in minutes per game, 85th nationally and second in the GNAC in points per game, fifth in the GNAC in steals per game, 44th nationally and third in the GNAC in three-point field goals per game, 78th nationally and third in the GNAC in three-point field goal percentage. 29th nationally and third in the GNAC in total three-point field goals made, seventh in the GNAC in total field goals made, 70th nationally in total minutes, 55th nationally and fifth in the GNAC in total points and fifth in the GNAC in total steals. Cobb ranks fifth in the GNAC in blocked shots per game and in total blocks.

Alaska Fairbanks enters the week 3-3 on the season having split their games this past week defeating #19 Hawaii Hilo (76-67) and falling to Quincy (83-76). Both of those games were played at a neutral site in Anchorage. WOU has gone 8-2 over the past 10 meetings in the series, with the teams playing three times in 2019-20. UAF claimed the first meeting in Fairbanks (72-66), then WOU came back for the 95-89 win in Monmouth. The teams then faced each other in the GNAC Tournament with the Nanooks taking the 91-88 victory.

On the season, UAF is averaging 77.2 points, shooting 160-360 (44.4) from the field, 50-121 (41.3) from three and 93-131 (71) from the foul line. The Nanooks also average 33.2 rebounds, 12.5 assists, 8.5 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. Opponents average 76.7 points, shooting 171-361 (47.4) from the field, 49-146 (33.6) from three and 69-98 (70.4) from the foul line. Opponents also average 36 rebounds, 15.8 assists, 5.7 steals and 2.5 blocks per game.

Shadeed Shabazz leads the way averaging 20 points per game, along with making 42 field goals, 23 free throws, 4.8 rebounds, 17 assists and 19 steals. Quin Barnard adds 12.7 points per game, connecting on 21 three-pointers and has 13 assists. Koby Huerta is at 11.2 points per game, making over 47 percent from the field and has 17 assists. Coleman Sparling gives the Nanooks four averaging in double-figures with 10.3 points, along with 5.3 rebounds and 11 assists.

To close the week, WOU will face Alaska Anchorage on Saturday. The Seawolves are 5-2 on the season as they won both games this past weekend at home against Quincy (81-66) and #19 Hawaii Hilo (100-97). WOU has gone 7-3 over the past 10 meetings in the series. During the 2019-20 season, the teams played two really close games. The first meeting in Anchorage went to the Seawolves, but in overtime by a score of 88-86. During the second meeting in Monmouth, WOU held off a charge by UAA to take the 85-84 victory. WOU has won the past six meetings in Monmouth.

So far this season, UAA is averaging 78.7 points, shooting 203-441 (46) from the field, 73-197 (37.1) from three and 72-103 (69.9) at the foul line. The Seawolves also average 37 rebounds, 19.7 assists, 5.7 steals and 3.4 blocks. Opponents average 64.7 points, shooting 170-418 (40.7) from the field, 47-157 (29.9) from three and 66-81 (81.5) at the foul line. Opponents also average 33 rebounds, 12.7 assists, 4.7 steals and 2.6 blocks per game.

Hunter Sweet leads the Seawolves averaging 18.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 18 assists, six steals and four blocks whole making 18 three-pointers. The transfer stayed in the GNAC after playing the 2019-20 season at Concordia (OR). Tobin Karlberg adds 17 points per game, along with 4.9 rebounds, 18 assists and nine steals. Oggie Pantovic is at 13.3 points per game and 8.9 rebounds, making over 50 percent from the field and has 19 assists and 12 blocks. David Rowlands gives UAA four averaging in double-figures at 11.7 points, along with 41 assists.
