MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University football team closed the 2021 season in style cruising to the 55-16 win on Senior Day over Lincoln (CA) on Saturday afternoon at McArthur Field.
WOU honored their 10 seniors before the game in Curtis Anderson, Jakob Pruitt, Anthony Orlando, Andrew Gross, Twister McComas, Widny Joseph, Mack Little, Jarren Ford, Braden Fuszek, and Ryan Worthley.
"It's a great way to send our seniors off with a win today. For them to show the resiliency and leadership they have given over the past few years has been hard to measure," head coach Arne Ferguson said. "We played really well on both sides of the ball and a lot of players made big plays."
The Wolves forced five turnovers and recorded seven sacks, while holding Lincoln to just 130 total yards and six net yards rushing. Anderson recorded a pair of interceptions and tallied 100 return yards off of the interceptions. Little put together a strong senior game as well with three tackles for loss and a sack.
Gannon Winker got the start at quarterback and accounted for five touchdowns. He completed 10-15 for 164 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for a pair of touchdowns as well. Dante Davis carried the ball 10 times for 58 yards and a touchdown and Omari Land added 19 carries for 56 yards and a score. Damon Hickok caught three passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, while Ford on his senior day brought in two passes for 34 yards.
Daron Ulrich Jr. led the defense with eight tackles, while Jaylin Parnell had six solo tackles, four tackles for loss and three sacks. He also added two quarterback hurries. Machiah Lee also added an interception. Anthony Mack Jr. picked up two sacks and Hector Cazares recorded a sack.
After forcing a quick three-and-out, WOU (4-6) went to work on offense near midfield. Faced with a third-and-six from the Lincoln (1-8) 10, Winker hit Land out in the flat who was wide open and cruised in for the touchdown just over five minutes in for the 7-0 lead.
Two sacks and a muffed punt followed on the next drive for Lincoln and put WOU in the red zone. After getting down to the six off of a face mask penalty, Land carried the ball two straight times, picking up three yards each time to find the end zone on the second carry for the 14-0 lead.
Lincoln put together a drive that started towards the end of the first quarter and carried into the second and went 39 yards on 10 plays before finding the end zone from two yards out to trim the WOU lead to 14-7.
WOU then dominated the rest of the half. After getting the ball back deep in Lincoln territory following a 30-yard punt return by Joey Sinclair had the ball at the LU five, the Wolves would find the end zone on a pass from Winker to Kade Hustler from one-yard out for the 21-7 lead.
Just two plays later, Lee came up with an interception at the Lincoln 36. Three plays after that, Dominique Loggins rushed in from a yard out for the 28-7 lead. Winker found Ford earlier in the drive for a big 35-yard pickup to setup the goal-to-go situation.
Before the half finished out, a fumble by the Oaklanders was recovered by L.J. Lovelace at the Lincoln 23. On the very next snap, Winker hit Hickok for a 23-yard touchdown to leave WOU with a 34-9 lead at the half as Lincoln was able to return a blocked extra point back for two points.
Lincoln got a fortune bounce to start the second half when the kickoff bounced over the head of Anderson and was recovered by LU at the WOU 27. Four plays later, Lincoln scored their final points of the game on a 26-yard TD pass.
WOU answered right back with Winker hitting Thomas Wright for a 27-yard reception and then Hickok for 22 more yards down to the LU 12. On third down, Winker did a nice fake pitch to the running back and then kept it himself going in untouched from four yards out to push the lead to 41-16.
Into the fourth quarter, WOU put together a 10-play drive that started after Anderson recorded an interception at the WOU 18 and then returned it 70 yards. The Wolves cashed in the turnover when Winker rushed in from six yards out for the 48-16 advantage.
WOU closed the scoring when the second Anderson interception had the ball sitting at the Lincoln 25. Two plays later, Davis rushed in for the TD from 25 yards out to provide the final margin of 55-16.
The Wolves put together a balanced attack passing for 164 yards and rushing for 118 to tally 282 total yards on the day.
Cameron Burston completed 15-35 for 124 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions for Lincoln. David Teu rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown, while Faizon Knight caught six passes for 41 yards. Quindarius Coles led the defense with 10 tackles, while Deon White added eight.
