CHADRON, Neb. – It will be the first meeting between the teams and the second time this season the Western Oregon University football team will face a school from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference when they travel to Nebraska for a meeting with Chadron State this Saturday starting at 11 a.m. (Pacific).
WOU opened the season against RMAC school Colorado School of Mines back on Sep. 2 and two months later will face another RMAC opponent in Chadron State.
The Wolves enter the week 3-5 on the season after rolling to a 42-3 home win over Simon Fraser. Omari Land and Machiah Lee were both named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Players of the Week for their performances in the game.
This will be the sixth and final road game of the season for WOU, as they began the season with four straight road contests with three in different stats and the final one taking them into Canada to face Simon Fraser. WOU played only one road game in October which was at Central Washington on Oct. 23 following a bye week.
On the season, WOU has tallied 162 points, 161 first downs, 1,279 rushing yards, 1,565 passing yards for a total of 2,844 yards and 22 total touchdowns, with 13 coming on the ground. Opponents have scored 233 points, picked up 145 first downs, rushed for 1,193 yards and passed for 1,540 for a total of 2,733 yards and 31 total touchdowns, 15 coming through the air.
Ryan Worthley has completed 146-232 yards for 1,470 yards and eight touchdowns. He threw three TD passes against Simon Fraser this past week. Land has rushed for 806 yards on 146 carries and nine touchdowns. Andrew Valladares adds 46 carries for 299 yards and two touchdowns. Dominique Loggins is also over 100 yards, rushing 21 times for 128 yards. Thomas Wright leads the receivers with 31 catches for 378 yards and three touchdowns. Valladares has 20 catches for 234 yards and Jarren Ford is over 200 yards receiving with 27 catches for 228 yards and a touchdown. Damon Hickok adds 16 receptions for 185 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Jaylin Parnell leads the team with 60 tackles, 36 solo, along with 11 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, three pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and a blocked field goal. Ryan Minniti has 48 tackles, 30 solo, two tackles for loss, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries. Joey Sinclair has 40 tackles, one tackle for loss, three interceptions and a forced fumble. Curtis Anderson has 36 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and five quarterback hurries. Lee gives the Wolves five players with at least 34 tackles, along with 21 solo stops, two tackles for loss, a sack and six pass breakups. Billy Nelson is tied with Sinclair for the team lead in interceptions with three. L.J. Lovelace has 5.5 tackles for loss.
On special teams, Andrew Gross has punted 31 times for an average of 38.94 yards, with seven landing inside the 20 and three traveling over 50 yards, including a season-long 65-yard punt. Danny Cossette is 3-6 on field goals and Tanner Shattuck has handled most of the kickoff duties, kicking off 20 times for an average of 52.6 yards.
On returns, Marquis Sampson has 10 punt returns for 77 yards and Sinclair has three returns for 17 yards. On kickoff returns, Curtis Anderson has 19 returns for 360 yards, Sampson has nine returns for 200 yards and Sinclair with three returns for 88 yards.
WOU ranks high nationally in several categories including 60th in fourth down conversion percentage (52.2), 26th in completion percentage (62.7), 34th in first downs allowed on defense (145), 66th in kickoff return average yards per game (20.14), 36th in total interceptions thrown (6), 52nd in passing yards allowed per game (192.5), 62nd in rushing yards per game (159.9), 48th in time of possession (31:18), 67th in total defense yards per game allowed (341.6), and 52nd in total turnovers lost (12).
Individually, Land ranks 66th nationally in all-purpose yards (110.1), 20th in rushing touchdowns (9), 31st in rushing yards (806), 21st in rushing yards per game (100.8), 78th in scoring per game (6.8), 88th in total points scored (54) and 49th in total touchdowns (9). Anderson is 59th nationally in combined kick return yards (360) and 91st in kickoff return yards per game (18.9). Worthley is 28th nationally in completion percentage (62.9), 39th in completions per game (18.25), 97th in passing efficiency (122.4), 83rd in passing yards (1,470), 79th in passing yards per game (183.8), and 91st in total offense per game (183.4). Parnell is 47th nationally in forced fumbles per game (0.25), 84th in solo tackles per game (4.5) and 35th in tackles for loss per game (1.4). Nelson and Sinclair are tied for 39th nationally in interceptions per game (0.40). Sampson is 48th in kickoff return yards per game (22.2) and 43rd in punt return yards per game (7.3). Gross is tied for 47th in net punting per game (38.9).
Chadron State enters the week 4-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play, as they hold a 2-2 record at home. Both Chadron State and WOU played a common opponent in Colorado School of Mines as the Eagles lost at Golden this past week, 34-7.
For the season, the Eagles have scored 257 points, picked up 181 first downs, rushed for 1,333 yards and passed for 2,111 yards for a total of 3,444 yards and 33 touchdowns. Opponents have scored 229 points, picked up 169 first downs, rushed for 1,491 yards, passed for 1,776 yards for a total of 2,969 yards and 31 touchdowns.
Dalton Holst has completed 154-270 for 2,047 yards and 15 touchdowns. Jeydon Cox has rushed for 448 yards on 86 carries and five touchdowns, Elijah Myles adds 85 carries for 410 yards and three touchdowns. Dorian Collier has carried the ball 55 times for 341 yards and two touchdowns. Chad Mikelson leads the receivers with 29 catches for 545 yards and six touchdowns, while Cole Thurness adds 42 catches for 404 yards and five touchdowns.
On defense, Noah Kerchal has 61 tackles, 38 solo, along with 2.5 tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries. Travis Wilson adds 60 tackles, with 32 solo, along with 9.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and three pass breakups. Hunter O'Connor and Xavier Harrell lead the team in sacks with 3.5 each and Bobby Peele has five interceptions.
On special teams, Gunnar Jones has punted 29 times for an average of 40.28 yards, landing seven inside the 20 and seven traveling over 50 yards. Jones is also 7-13 on field goal attempts, with a long of 45 yards. On kickoffs, Jones has 49 for an average of 61.7 yards and 19 touchbacks. On returns, Thurness has 10 punt returns for 92 yards and Mikelson has three for 83 yards. Cox has returned seven kickoffs for 147 yards and Thurness has four returns for 94 yards.
