ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team opened its 2021-22 season with a 67-62 overtime victory over IUPUI on Tuesday evening (Nov. 9) at Crisler Center. Michigan scored the first seven points of the extra period to wrap up the win.
U-M extends its season-opening win streak to eight straight, all of which have come at Crisler.
The Wolverines were led by Naz Hillmon, who tallied her 34th career double-double with 30 points, marking her sixth 30-point contest and her 38th career game with 20 points or more, while adding 15 rebounds -- four of which were offensive.
Senior Leigha Brown netted 18 points in the opener, seven of which came from the charity stripe, and Emily Kiser grabbed a career-high nine rebounds and made two three-pointers in the first quarter.
U-M used 38 points in the paint and 20 points off of turnovers to help push it past IUPUI.
Three Wolverines saw their debuts with Laila Phelia leading the freshman trio with four points and four rebounds, while Jordan Hobbs had three points and Ari Wiggins finished the evening with two points and a steal.
Kiser got the Wolverine offense flowing with back-to-back three-pointers to give U-M a an 8-5 advantage midway through the first quarter. IUPUI answered with six straight points, but Hillmon took over coming out of the media break to score six of her own and force a Jaguars timeout with 2:23 remaining with Wolverines leading 14-12. IUPUI hit one final three-pointer in the final two minutes to take a one-point lead, 15-14, into the second quarter.
The two teams exchanged baskets with IUPUI leading 22-20 at the media timeout. Again, the U-M offense came together out of the break with Brown hitting back-to-back shots, including a triple before Hillmon made a layup and Wiggins swiped the ball on defense and made the fast break layup to put Michigan up 29-24 with under two minutes left in the half.
The Maize and Blue closed out the half on a 12-2 run with nine unanswered to take a 32-24 advantage into the locker room. Hillmon led Michigan with 12 points, while Brown added eight and Kiser had six. Defensively, U-M forced six turnovers and added three blocks and three steals.
Late in the third quarter, Michigan went on a 7-0 run before forcing a backcourt turnover with its press, which led to a Brown jumper to give U-M a 47-34 advantage with 3:10 left to play in the third stanza. IUPUI finished the quarter on 4-for-4 shooting, closing the gap to six, 49-43, with 10 minutes left in regulation.
The Jaguars kept themselves within close range of the Wolverines, but Hillmon threaded a pass between three defenders to junior Maddie Nolan for a layup and then followed it up with a layup of her own to push the Michigan lead to seven, 58-51, with under three minutes to remaining. IUPUI did not let up, holding the Wolverines scoreless for the next two minutes and knotting the score at 58 with one minute remaining. Neither team could convert on their final possessions, sending the game to overtime.
Hillmon snapped a five-minute U-M scoreless drought with made free throw and added two layups, while Danielle Rauch made a floating layup, giving Michigan 65-60 lead with 43 seconds left in overtime. Brown added two final free throws to cap the season-opening win.
Michigan continues its three-game homestand to start the season on Saturday (Nov. 13) at 2 p.m., hosting St. Francis Brooklyn at Crisler Center. U-M will raise its 2021 NCAA Sweet 16 banner prior to the contest.
