BELLINGHAM, Wash./BURNABY, B.C. – Following the big win over Seattle Pacific last week at home, the Western Oregon University volleyball team will travel this week for more Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Simon Fraser on Thursday and Western Washington on Saturday. Both matches are set to start at 7 p.m.
WOU (3-16, 1-11 GNAC) is coming off of a 1-1 home week as they swept Seattle Pacific and then Montana State Billings rallied for a 3-1 win on Saturday. During the earlier meetings this season against both teams, the Wolves picked up a set against WWU before the Vikings took the 3-1 win on Oct. 7. During the Oct. 9 meeting against Simon Fraser, SFU picked up the 3-0 win, but WOU pushed both sets two and three right down to the end.
On the season, the Wolves have tallied 774 kills, 715 assists, 105 service aces, 1,060 digs and 129 blocks. Opponents have 936 kills, 851 assists, 103 service aces, 1,162 digs and 131 blocks.
Isabel Hurliman leads the team with 254.5 points, tallying 215 kills, 24 service aces, 201 digs and 30 blocks. Bailee Hartsook adds 161.5 points, collecting 148 kills, 79 digs and 22 blocks. Lauren Smith gives the Wolves three with over 100 points as she has 129.5, tallying 148 kills, 44 digs and 29 blocks. Aubrey Stanton leads the team in assists with 371, followed by 232 by Laney O'Neil. Four Wolves have at least 10 service aces with Hurliman leading the way with 24, followed by 23 from Stanton, 15 from Sophie Matlock and 10 from O'Neil. Sophie Matlock leads the back row with 290 digs, as WOU has four with at least 100 digs. Hurliman has 201, Stanton at 111 and O'Neil at 105. Makenzie York has a team-best 46 blocks, with Bella MacLellan second at 44 and Hurliman is third with 30.
WOU ranks sixth in the GNAC in service aces per set (1.48). Individually, Stanton is sixth in the GNAC in service aces per set (0.37), ninth in assists per set (5.89) and ninth in total assists (371). Hurliman is ninth in the GNAC in service aces per set (0.34), seventh in kills per set (3.03), and seventh in points per set (3.58). Matlock is eighth in the GNAC in digs per set (4.08).
The Wolves will first travel to Canada to meet up with Simon Fraser on Thursday. During the first meeting, SFU held on in sets two and three by scores of 25-23 to win in straight sets. Hartsook led the offense with 10 kills and added eight digs.
Simon Fraser enters the week receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top-25 Poll going 15-5 overall on the season and 9-4 in GNAC play. SFU had a seven-match winning streak snapped last time out at Alaska Fairbanks when the Nanooks won in four sets. Earlier on the trip to Alaska, Simon Fraser picked up the 3-1 win over Alaska Anchorage.
On the season, SFU has 1,008 kills, 938 assists, 109 service aces, 1,194 digs and 155 blocks. Opponents have 847 kills, 776 assists, 103 service aces, 1,089 digs and 147 blocks. Brooke Dexter leads the team with 350.5 points collecting 308 kills. Kalyn Hartmann adds 206 points with 160 kills and Camryn Vosloh has 203.5 points with 175 kills. Hannah Kolof gives the team four with at least 100 kills sitting at 138. Julia tays sets up the offense with 736 of the team's 938 assists. Dexter has a team-high 20 service aces. On defense, Biana Te leads the back row with 308 digs and Dexter adds 190. Hartmann has sent back 72 blocks and Dexter adds 42.
WOU will close the road trip in Bellingham on Saturday against #18 Western Washington. The Vikings are 15-4 overall and 11-1 in GNAC play. They were able to win both matches on the road trip to Alaska last week, defeating Alaska Fairbanks in five sets and then sweeping Alaska Anchorage. WWU is currently on a 10-match winning streak. In the earlier meeting back on Oct. 7, WOU responded from dropping the first set to taking the second set, before the Vikings were able to pull away in sets three and four to claim the victory. Hurliman led the offense with 13 kills and completed the double-double with 11 digs.
On the season, Western Washington has 982 kills, 920 assists, 96 service aces, 1,207 digs and 197 blocks. Opponents have 933 kills, 886 assists, 104 service aces, 1,260 digs and 126 blocks. Calley Heilborn leads the team with 291 points and 245 kills. Gabby Gunterman adds 282.5 points and 235 kills, while Olivia Fairchild is over 200 points sitting at 237 and 181 kills. WWU has five players with at least 133 kills. Malia Aleaga sets up the offense with 585 assists and both Heilborn and Tupu Lologo lead the team in service aces with 22. On defense, Heilbron leads the back row in digs with 315, followed by 291 from Kasey Woodruff. Fairchild has sent back 98 blocks and Chloe Roetcisoender has 86 blocks.
Entering this week, Western Washington leads the GNAC standings with a 11-1 mark, followed by Alaska Anchorage at 9-3 and Simon Fraser rounds out the top-three with a 9-4 mark.
