MONMOUTH, Ore. – The early season home tournament is here again for the Western Oregon women's basketball team when they host three other teams this Friday and Saturday inside New PE Gym. Joining the Wolves will be fellow GNAC school Saint Martin's and then two teams from the CCAA in Chico State and Sonoma State.
On Friday, Saint Martin's and Sonoma State will begin the day at 2 p.m. WOU will follow against Chico State at 4:15 p.m. Then on Saturday, Saint Martin's will face Chico State at 12 p.m. and WOU will follow against Sonoma State at 2:15 p.m. For tickets to all four games, please click here.

WOU is coming off of their first two regular season games of the year. The Wolves opened against #25 Hawaii Pacific and were within two at halftime when the Sharks exploded in the second half for the 85-61 victory. A few days later, WOU traveled just down the road to Salem to face Willamette and behind a big second half cruised to the 72-39 win.
Through the first two games, WOU is averaging 66.5 points, making 53-109 (48.8) from the field, 9-25 (36) from three, 18-28 (64.3) from the foul line. The Wolves are averaging 37 rebounds, 13 assists, six steals and 4.5 blocks per contest. Opponents have averaged 62 points, made 46-122 (37.7) from the field, 9-28 (32.1) from three and 23-32 (71.9) at the foul line. Rebounding 30 per game, 12.5 assists per game, six steals and one block per contest.
Meadow Aragon is off to a strong start averaging 14 points and six rebounds after two games. She is making 11-17 (64.7) from the field and a perfect 6-6 at the foul line. Aragon also has six blocks, two assists and a steal. Ana McClave is second on the team in scoring at nine points per game and has brought down four rebounds per game. She has connected on 6-9 (66.7) from the field and 2-3 (66.7) from three. McClave also has four assists, two steals and a block. Kaelin Williams-Kennedy and Alexis Wright are tied for third on the team at seven points per game.
Through the first week of the season, WOU ranks high nationally in several categories including 30th in blocked shots (9) and 30th in blocked shots per game (4.5), 46th in defensive rebounds per game (30.5), 20th in field goal percentage (48.6), 62nd in rebound margin (7.0), and 55th in three-point field goal percentage (36).
Individually, Aragon is ninth nationally and second in the GNAC in blocked shots (6), eighth nationally and second in the GNAC in blocked shots per game (3), 38th nationally and third in the GNAC in field goal percentage (64.7), tied for first nationally and in the GNAC in free throw percentage (100) and is fifth in the GNAC in points per game (14).
First up, WOU will face Chico State on Friday afternoon. Since 2001, Chico State is 8-0 against WOU and 2-0 in Monmouth. The last meeting was at a neutral site in 2019-20 where the Wildcats held on for the 50-46 victory. The last time the teams played in Monmouth was during the 2015-16 season with Chico State taking the 65-54 win.
Chico State is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Fresno Pacific (66-57), Dominican (CA) (79-77) and then began this week with a dominating win at Holy Names (97-46) on Tuesday. Chico State is averaging 80.7 points, making 90-183 (49.2) from the field, 21-69 (30.4) from three and 41-48 (85.4) at the foul line. Opponents are averaging 60 points, making 62-170 (36.5) from the field, 16-63 (25.4) from three and 40-56 (71.4) from the foul line. The Wildcats average 35.7 rebounds per game, 17 assists, 8.3 steals and 0.3 blocks per game. Opponents grab 30.3 rebounds per game, add 10 assists per game, tally five assists per game and send back 1.7 blocks per game.
Three players average in double-figures led by Charity Gallegos' 14.3 points per game, making 57.7 from the field and adds 4.3 rebounds per game, 18 assists and seven steals. Bailey Jones tallies 12 points per game, and 4.3 rebounds. Myli Martinez tallies 11 points per game, six assists and four steals.
The Wolves will finish the week on Saturday against Sonoma State. The Seawolves are 0-2 so far on the season dropping the first two games to Dominican (CA) (72-55) and Fresno Pacific (70-63). Sonoma State will play Sacrament State this week before traveling to Monmouth.
Since 2000, WOU and Sonoma State have played three times with the Wolves holding a 2-1 record. All three meetings were played in California, with two at neutral sites and the most recent one during the 2019-20 season being played in Rohnert Park where WOU claimed the 60-52 victory.
On the season, the Seawolves average 59 points, making 46-116 (39.7) from the field, 6-29 (20.7) from three and 20-32 (62.5) from the foul line. Opponents average 71 points, making 51-107 (47.7) from the field, 12-28 (42.9) from three and 28-38 (73.7) from the foul line. The Seawolves average 37.5 rebounds per game, 8.5 assists, six steals and 1.5 blocks, while opponents grab 31.5 rebounds, dish out 8.5 assists, tally 9.5 steals and two blocks per game.
Taylor Johnson leads the team averaging nine points per game. Zane Sheckherd and Amanda Luckett average 8.5 points per game. Luckett leads the team in rebounds at 6.5 per game.
Following the home tournament this week, WOU will travel to Texas during the Thanksgiving week facing Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday and Texas A&M-International on Friday.
