CDCR institutions, divisions and support staff interact with the community every August as part of National Night Out activities. Officially observed August 2, the event is about promoting community while interacting with law enforcement and public safety agencies.
CCI staff connects with Tehachapi
California Correctional Institution (CCI) staff joined the California Highway Patrol, Kern County Sheriff’s Office, Kern County Fire Department and Hall’s Ambulance at the National Night Out event in Tehachapi.
Attending the event were CCI Warden Brian Cates, Investigative Services Unit (ISU), Crisis Response Team (CRT) and Public Information Officer Lieutenant Barthelmes. They greeted residents and shared a little about what CCI does within the community. Local residents were excited to meet the staff and ask questions about the “city” within their city.
The community was thrilled to meet the Warden, saying they were surprised someone like the Warden would attend.
ISU answered questions about their role within the prison. CRT displayed some of their gear, allowing people to try on a helmet and hold a ballistic shield.
Channel 23 ABC News Bakersfield covered National Night Out, interviewing Warden Cates about why it’s important for CDCR to be out in the community. Lieutenant Barthelmes was also interviewed about job opportunities within CDCR.
“In all it was a great night for the community to meet CCI as well as other departments. But, more importantly, it was great for us as a department to connect with the community we serve and protect,” said CCI organizers.
Correctional Training Center staff interacts with Galt community
Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center (CTC) staff, along with the City of Galt, participated in the National Night Out at Galt Community Park.
National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement, to help make our neighborhoods safer and to bring back a true sense of community.
Sergeants A. Sawma, R. Hutchison, and J. Pease said they had a great time meeting community members and answering any questions the public had about the Department.

Pelican Bay State Prison represents at first National Night Out
During Crescent City’s first National Night Out, Pelican Bay State Prison joined police, Del Norte County Sheriff, fire, Department of Fish and Wildlife, Del Norte Ambulance, and California Highway Patrol.
Food was donated by local restaurants and prizes were offered throughout the evening. Many people attended, socializing and having fun while kids enjoyed bounce houses.
Some prizes included new bicycles, backpacks stuffed with back-to-school supplies, and gift cards. Overall it was a success, bringing together the community and agencies.
Organizers say it is the start of a new tradition for Del Norte County.
