A woman told police Santos spent the day there, but he was drunk and they started arguing. She put a friend on speakerphone, who told Santos to leave. In response, he allegedly threatened to “burn down the house with everyone in it,” according to the affidavit.
He threatened to kill the friend over the phone, the woman told police. Santos blocked her in a bedroom with a dresser, but the woman got out and told her daughter to hide in the bathroom.
She also managed to give the daughter a cellphone and told her to call a family friend to pick her up.
Santos, angry, allowed the girl to leave, but “pulled” the woman back into the house. He then tried to force her out another door, saying they would ram the other car. He put his hands over her mouth to muffle her screaming. She managed to get back in the house.
He ran off, realizing the police were coming. Police officers tracked his footprints in the snow, arrested him and took him to the Hammond City Jail.
At some point, he beat the woman, who had bruises on her arms and a “redness” on her mouth.
