Kingwood ended the season with a 26-22 win over Summer Creek Saturday afternoon.
It has been a long road for Kingwood coach Cale Melton in his first year with the Mustangs, starting out the season slow but gaining ground at the end of the season to have a two-game winning streak heading into the offseason.
“These guys could have quit a long time ago, but they didn’t,” Melton said. “I’m so ecstatic right now, they gave us everything they had. They never quit and kept fighting and that’s a testament to them. I want to thank this coaching staff, my players, and the community for putting their faith in us. I couldn’t be more happier going into the offseason. This is truly unbelievable.”
District 21-6A foes Kingwood and Summer Creek will not be in the playoffs this season, but will look to bounce back next year.
Melton and the Mustangs’ (2-8, 2-4) defense controlled the first half.
Summer Creek (3-6, 1-5) didn’t have a first down in the first half and had 10 yards on offense.
The Bulldogs got their 1st first down in the third quarter with eight minutes left on the clock.
The Mustangs’ defense forced two fumbles and had one interception in the game.
“The guys were just doing the little things right on defense,” Melton said. “They were really flying around out there making plays and our offense stepped up.”
Kaden Wooster made two field goals and Nick Bernell scored on a 9-yard TD run as the Mustangs went into the locker room with a 13-0 lead on Summer Creek.
Bernell finished the game with 14 carries for 123 yards with a touchdown while having two receptions for 39 yards for the Mustangs.
Summer Creek got rolling in the third quarter, moving the ball with its up-tempo offense.
Bryan Bush hit Andrew Alexander for a 65-yard touchdown pass as the Bulldogs cut the Mustangs' lead to six with 7:27 left in the third quarter.
The Mustangs responded with a touchdown drive of their own when senior running back Kasey Duplechin scored on a 17-yard run that put Kingwood up 19-7 with 3:32 left in the third quarter.
Duplechin finished the game with 18 carries for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Summer Creek kicked a field goal and Kingwood went into the fourth quarter with a 19-10 lead over the Bulldogs.
Bush threw his second touchdown of the game by connecting with Alexander for a 23-yard TD pass, but the Bulldogs still trailed Kingwood, 19-16, with 7:15 left in the game.
Kingwood attempted a fourth-down conversion in the fourth quarter with 1:16 left in the game. The pass was incomplete, but a flag was thrown on the play for holding on the defense and Kingwood was awarded a first down.
Bernell went into the end zone for the final time. That helped put the Mustangs up 26-16 with 1:10 left in the game.
Bush, who finished the game 9-for-20 for 185 yards and three touchdowns, threw his third touchdown to Alexander to cut the Kingwood lead to four with 37 seconds left in the game.
Those were the last points for Summer Creek’s season.
Alexander finished the game with six receptions for 141 yards and three touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
Melton will look to have a strong offseason preparing for next season.
The work is just beginning for Melton and the Mustangs.
“These seniors have been great all year,” Melton said. “We started off bad and they could have given up and quit but they didn’t. They laid the foundation for this team and program going forward. Now it’s time for us to build on that in the offseason. We have to get better mentally and physically and have a great offseason program.”
