LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team earned an 80-69 Christmas Day victory Friday at Nebraska in its first road game of the 2020-21 season.
Freshman Hunter Dickinson had his second career double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down a career-best 15 rebounds, while sophomore Franz Wagner posted his first 20-point game of the season, going 9-for-16 from the floor for a team-high 20 points, and grabbed nine rebounds.
Senior Isaiah Livers netted 17 points with three three-pointers, while Chaundee Brown Jr. and Mike Smith rounded out the double-digit scorers with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Wolverines shot 50.8 percent (30-for-59) from the floor in the contest and 57.7 percent in the second half. The Maize and Blue also knocked down nine three-pointers.
On the glass, U-M outrebounded Nebraska, 43-31, with Dickinson grabbing three of Michigan's eight offensive boards.
Both teams struggled to get the offense going early before making three straight shots, and the game was tied at 13 after a Smith three-pointer with just over 13 minutes remaining in the first half. The teams exchanged baskets until Nebraska went on a 7-0 run to take a 32-29 lead with 2:32 left in the opening stanza.
U-M used a triple from Brown to take a 34-32 lead and carried a 36-34 edge into the halftime break. Wagner led the Wolverines with 11 points in the first half, while Dickinson pulled down 10 rebounds and Brown scored nine points.
Wagner tallied five points and assisted on a Livers triple during a 10-0 run that gave U-M a 12-point advantage, 53-41, with just over 14 minutes left in the contest. The Wolverines led 62-49 with nine minutes to play before both teams went on a scoring drought of over two minutes.
The Maize and Blue had four turnovers and allowed Nebraska to come back within five, 67-62, with 5:41 remaining in the game. However, back-to-back makes from Livers and Brooks put the lead back up to nine, which Michigan maintained for the remainder of the game.
The Wolverine defense put the Cornhuskers on ice for three of the final four minutes of the game to earn the road victory.
Michigan (7-0, 2-0 B1G) will be back in action Thursday (Dec. 31) when it travels to Maryland for 7 p.m. contest on ESPN2.
