Hand-painted ornaments that celebrate Saginaw

The iconic neon Beans bunny sign, White’s Bar, Hoyt Park’s ice skating rink, the Japanese gardens, the Castle Museum — these are a few of the Saginaw landmarks artist Merry Feith celebrates with her line of hand-painted ornaments.

Feith began painting and selling her Saginaw-themed ornaments in 2019, and new this year is an ornament featuring the Temple Theatre. They sell for $20 a piece.

Although their new storefront isn’t open yet, co-owners Alexis Peake and Kayla Pietrzak are taking orders for the holiday season.

Fig & Honey offers its signature “Millennial Lunchable,” made with meat, cheeses, fresh fruit, nuts and a spread for $20, charcuterie boards for small groups ranging in price from $30 to $60, and “Grazing Tables” for special events priced from about $7 to $10 per person.

Low-tech toys from downtown Midland’s Joyful Tantrum

Joyful Tantrum offers a variety of toys to encourage low-tech play, including puzzles, blocks, dolls, board games, and art supplies, plus children’s books.

“Our toy store is a toy store unplugged,” Julia Kepler, who owns Joyful Tantrum and neighboring Serendipity Road, told MLive/The Saginaw News when her shop opened in 2019. Rather than flashy toys that light up and make noise, Joyful Tantrum offers low-tech toys that get a child’s “creative brain engaged — their imagination,” Kepler said.

Bayne’s Apple Valley Farm has Michigan-made treats, gifts and, new this year, hard cider.

The apple orchard and family-owned bakery, cafe and gift shop, located at 5395 Midland Road, M-47, in Saginaw County, recently launched its new Bayne’s Hard Cider House brand. Guests can now find traditional fall favorites, plus 10 hard ciders on tap, growlers, Michigan wines and more.

Saginaw woman Brittany Rosas launched the makeup line earlier this year. Rosas told MLive/The Saginaw News she was inspired to make her own cosmetics by a woman she saw on Instagram.

Bourbon by Bay City’s Third Wind Distilling Co.

Third Wind Distilling Co., which touts itself as Bay City’s first legal distillery, has released its first spirit product: Third Wind Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

“A semi-limited release, this bourbon is a blend of carefully selected barrels, each aged a minimum of four years. This spirit offers a deep, honey-amber hue with crisp aromas of caramel, vanilla, apple and cinnamon. On the palate, you will find a bourbon made for sipping. Eminently enjoyable, easy going and very smooth, this whiskey has medium notes of orchard fruit, spice and mint. It has a light body with warm texture and long finish of sweet oak and vanilla,” reads a Third Wind Distilling news release. “The bold design of the bottle comes from letter ‘M’ of the nautical alphabet, which is a nod to the state of Michigan and her Great Lakes.”

Third Wind Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at 46% alcohol by volume (92 proof), available in 750 milliliter bottles and retails for $39.99.

Once again, with Buy BC, shoppers can purchase $25 gift cards for $20 each. The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and Bay Future Inc. relaunched the program to help area small businesses as they continue to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions.

Gift cards are available in $20 increments. For every $20 gift card purchased, the Buy BC fund will provide an additional 25% to the gift certificate to that same business at no added expense to the customer or business. Customers can purchase $25 Buy BC gift cards for $20 each online here while supplies last.
