DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 15 Duke women's lacrosse team came away with a gutsy 12-8 victory over No. 18 Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon in Koskinen Stadium.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 3-0 and are 1-0 in ACC action while the Hokies dip to 1-1 overall with their first conference loss this season.
"I felt like our mentality for today was that we think this game was going to teach us a lot about ourselves," head coach Kerstin Kimel said. "We have a tough slate, but I'm really, really proud of our team. I thought today was a really good step forward for us coming off of our Wednesday game.
Junior goalkeeper Sophia LeRose came off the bench for the Blue Devils as Duke trailed 5-4 with 15:49 remaining in the first half. LeRose was a force in goal, only allowing three goals with eight saves and three ground balls in just under 46 minutes of action.
Offensively, nine different Blue Devils registered goals in the victory as Katie Cronin, Caroline DeBellis and Gabby Rosenzweig notched two goals each. Rosenzweig led the team with five points with three assists as Cronin connected on both of her free-position shots. Duke also assisted on half its goals, while Rosenzweig and DeBellis have two goals in each of the three games this season.
Duke was first on the board as Abby Landry found Rosenzweig just over two minutes into the contest. The Hokies would go on to score three straight before Cronin's free position and Maddie Jenner's goal from Rosenzweig.
Goalkeeper LeRose came off the bench after Virginia Tech's goal by Emma Crooks at 15:49 and kept the Hokies without a goal for 14:30 minutes until Crooks' second goal of the day with .2 seconds remaining in the opening frame. During Virginia Tech's scoreless run, Duke added three more goals to lead by one heading into halftime, which included DeBellis' man-down opportunity to give Duke the lead (6-5), a lead that would hold the rest of the contest.
Duke outscored Virginia Tech 5-2 in the second stanza that started with a man-up goal by Catriona Barry (8-6) before Anna Callahan connected on her third free-position shot this season with 4:50 remaining to extend Duke's lead to 12-7. Virginia Tech's Caroline Allen secured its final goal of the game (12-8) off a man-up free position-shot.
Defensively, Barry led the team with four caused turnovers while Jenner and LeRose added three ground balls each.
Duke barely outshot Virginia Tech, 26-25, but picked up 22 ground balls to the Hokies' 14.
Virginia Tech was led by Sarah Lubnow, Paige Petty, Crooks and Allen all with three goals.
Duke will take the short trip down Tobacco Road to take on No. 1 North Carolina Friday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at Dorrance Field on ACC Network.
