The UConn Huskies will play host to the No. 15 nationally ranked Providence Friars in the 2020-21 regular season finale Friday at the Freitas Ice Forum.

The Huskies and Friars are separated by just .02 in the Hockey East Power Index to determine the final standings.  UConn is holding the 4th spot at 51.45 and Providence is 5th at 51.43.  Northeastern sits in 6th position at 50.53 and will face first-place Boston College this weekend.  The Hockey East post season will get underway with three opening round games between seeds 6-11 on Wednesday, March 10. Seeds 1-5 automatically qualify for the quarterfinals. Following a reseeding, the quarterfinals take place on Sunday, March 14. The semifinals are set for Wednesday, March 17 with the Lamoriello Trophy to be handed out in the championship game on Saturday, March 20.  The tournament will use a single-elimination format with each game hosted at the home arena of the higher seed

This will be the third match-up between the Huskies and Friars this season with each team posting a shutout win on their home ice earlier in the year.  UConn's Tomas Vomacka notched the second shutout of his career thanks to a 37-save effort in a 2-0 win in Storrs in late December.  The Friars answered back with a 4-0 win at home in February, holding the Huskies to a season-low 20 shots in front of sophomore goaltender Jaxson Stauber.

The Huskies are coming off a weekend home split with Maine where they fell 6-4 on Friday to drop their fourth-straight but rebounded on Saturday for a 4-2 win.  Friday's loss featured a shorthanded goal from junior Marc Gatcomb who added a pair of assists for a career-high three point game.  Each team was also awarded a penalty shot that they scored on with freshman Hudson Schandor getting his fifth goal on the year.  Sophomore Eric Linell got his first collegiate goal in the loss while junior Jonny Evans scored his Hockey East leading 13th of the season.

In Saturday's win, sophomore Carter Berger scored his first goal of the season while freshman Cassidy Bowes got his first collegiate goal.  Fellow freshman Ryan Tverberg scored the game-winner with a late third period power play tally, his fourth goal of the season.  Tverberg's goal was UConn's first power play goal in six games and snapping an 0-22 power play span during that stretch.

Junior Jonny Evans has been named a candidate for the 2021 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to college hockey's top player.  Fan-voting online is now open thru March 7 at HobeyBaker.com/vote.  Evans has a pair of Hockey East Player of the Week awards this year and his 24 points (13g/11a) is tied for the lead in the league.  His 13 goals is leading the conference and is tied for eighth nationally.

Junior Jachym Kondelik has 17 assists on the year, tied for the lead in Hockey East and is tied for 11th nationally, averaging 0.81 assists per game.

Rookie defenseman John Spetz is tied for 10th among Hockey East defensemen in scoring with 10 points (3g/7a).  He is also tied for 10th among the league's rookie scorers.  Classmate Hudson Schandor is tied for seven among conference freshmen in scoring with 11 points on five goals and six assists.

Spetz is leading Hockey East in blocked shots with 49 on the season.  He is eighth nationally averaging 2.45 per games.  Senior Adam Karashik is second on the club with 30 blocks, ranking seventh in the league.

Freshman Artem Shlaine is among the conference leaders in face-off percentage, winning 59.9 percent (142-95) on the year.  He is 13th in the nation.

Junior Carter Turnbull is tied for fifth in Hockey East with four power play goals.  His nine goals overall is also tied for fifth while he leads the league having generated 86 shots on net this season.

Junior goaltender Tomas Vomacka has played the most minutes of any goaltender in Hockey East this season (1273:43) and has also made the most saves (580).  He is fifth in goals against average (2.69) and sixth in save percentage (.911).
