What is Name, Image or Likeness?
Effective July 1, 2021, the NCAA will permit student-athletes to use their name, image, and likeness (NIL) for promotional purposes by a non-university entity. Additionally, student-athletes may be compensated for the use of their NIL.
CMU's C.O.R.E. (NIL) Program
We realize this change presents questions, and we want to ensure that you are educated and equipped with the necessary information to make informed decisions regarding your potential NIL activities. In preparation for this new arena of opportunity, CMU Athletics has created the C.O.R.E. (NIL) Program, which falls under The Chippewa Way. C.O.R.E. (NIL) stands for Cultivating Opportunities and Responsibility Education for Name, Image, and Likeness. This program is intended to provide information, education, and resources for student-athletes regarding NIL.
Some of the key education areas that we will focus on include marketing and brand management, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business law, and business relationships.
We encourage student-athletes to consider hiring a professional (e.g. agent, financial advisor, or attorney) to assist and advise them regarding NIL matters.
Name, Image or Likeness Restrictions
Despite the opportunities that NIL will offer student-athletes, there are some restrictions regarding NIL activities. Student-athletes may not:
- Engage in NIL activities with an entity that provides a product or service that conflicts with NCAA legislation (e.g., sports wagering, banned substances).
- Utilize institutional, conference or NCAA marks (e.g., logo, seal, or protected verbiage) in connection with a NIL activity.
- Miss class, athletically related activities, or other obligations (e.g., study table or tutoring) to participate in NIL activities.
- Receive preferential treatment or extra benefits in addition to compensation for their NIL.
- Be prevented from receiving compensation for NIL activities by the institution, conference, or NCAA.
- Have their athletic scholarship or grant-in-aid be affected due to receiving compensation for NIL activities.
Our athletics department, specifically our compliance office, is available to answer any questions you may have regarding potential NIL opportunities. If a student-athlete does decide to enter an agreement to receive compensation for their NIL, the student-athlete must disclose the agreement and its terms to the compliance office at least 7 days prior to performance of the agreement. To disclose NIL activities, student-athletes may utilize the disclosure form in ARMS by:
- Logging into ARMS
- Find the Name, Image, and Likeness Approval Form (Workflow Launchpad)
- Complete and submit form
