Baseball Sweeps Series with Clarkson on Senior Day - Ithaca College Athletics

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team celebrated its senior day with a win and a sweep over Clarkson on Sunday, May 1 at Freeman Field. The Bombers jumped out to an early lead and closed out late pressure on their way to a 7–3 victory. IC is now 25-10 on the season heading into its final regular season game on May 3.
 
Colin Leyner threw six strong innings giving up one run and striking out six batters. Louis Fabbo and David Cifonelli each recorded two RBI on two hits for the Bombers. Riley Brawdy also caused Clarkson trouble going 3–3 at the plate and scoring three runs.
 
Leyner kicked off senior day on the mound with a three up, three down first inning. Clarkson put a runner on first base with a single, but Leyner picked off the runner for the final out.
 
With one out in the bottom of the first, Fabbo hit a soft grounder to second beating the throw to first. Buzz Shirley was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, setting up an RBI single to left field from Nicholas Cutaia for the first run of the game. After Connor Pederson walked to load the bases, Matt Fabian hit a sacrifice fly extend the Bombers lead to 2–0.
 
Leyner got the first two Clarkson batters to fly out to centerfielder Collin Feeney getting a strikeout for the third out.
 
Riley Brawdy led off the bottom of the second with a perfect bunt down the first baseline and later advanced to second on a passed ball. The Bombers occupied first and third after Cifonelli hit an infield single. Fabbo hit a sacrifice fly scoring Brawdy to make it a 3–0 ballgame.
 
Leyner gave up a hit in the third inning but added to more strikeouts on his way a scoreless inning. The Bombers went three up, three down in the bottom of the third but Leyner kept the Bombers momentum throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.  
 
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bombers got runners to second and third with no outs on a single from Gil Merod and a walk from Brawdy who both advanced on a wild pitch. Cifonelli brough both runners' home on a two-run single to centerfield extending the Bombers lead to 5–0. Fabbo made it a 6–0 game singling to leftfield scoring Cifonelli.
 
Clarkson put some pressure on in the fifth getting runners to first and third, but Leyner forced a  flyball to centerfield to end the inning. The Bombers also got runners to first and third with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but a pop-up ended the scoring chance.
 
Clarkson got on the board in the top of the sixth with an RBI double down the left field wall to make it a 6–1 game. Leyner picked up two strikeouts to help the Bombers get out of the inning. The Bombers went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning.
 
Matt Chase came on to pitch the seventh inning after six innings of work from Leyner. Clarkson put runners on first and third on back-to-back singles. Clarkson got two more runs back on a ground rule double and a fielder's choice making it a 6–3 ballgame. With a runner on third, Chase calmly fielded a short groundball and threw to first to end the inning.
 
Timmy MacDonald picked up his first base hit of the season in the bottom of the seventh on an infield single. Macdonald got into scoring position advancing on a wild pitch, but the Bombers could not bring him home.
 
Erislandy Rives replaced Chase and made quick work of Clarkson in the eighth getting two groundouts and a strikeout. The Bombers added more in the eighth with Brawdy doubling and Collin Shashaty driving him home in the next at-bat with an RBI single.
 
The Bombers took a 7–3 lead into the final frame sending on Brett Budzak to get the final three outs. Clarkson loaded the bases with one out on a single and two walks bringing the tying run up to the plate. Budzak struck out the final two batters as the Bombers won game 3 against Clarkson.
 
Ithaca moves to 25–10 on the season and 13–4 in conference play after a three-game sweep of Clarkson. The Bombers travel to Alfred State on Tuesday, May 3 before they play their Liberty League Crossover Series next weekend.
