SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Keaton McCann led all players with six goals as the #15 Union College men's lacrosse team finally got its 2021 season started with a 19-6 victory over Plattsburgh State in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Nine different players scored for Union (1-0) and 11 different Dutchmen had at least one point on the day. In addition to McCann's six tallies, senior Brian Davis registered four points on three goals and an assist, classmate Hayden Frey scored three times, and junior Kieran McGovern picked up four points with a goal and three helpers.
The Dutchmen also performed well at the X by winning 22-of-28 faceoffs, led by junior Sam Byrne winning 20 of his 25 attempts and grabbing a game-high 13 ground balls.
Junior Peter Burnes started off the scoring 70 seconds into the contest, followed by McGovern's lone tally of the afternoon less than three minutes later. After the Cardinals scored twice to get back within a goal, Union found the net three times in the final 2:31 to secure its advantage, thanks to goals from Frey and McCann before Burnes bookended the quarter with his second of the day.
The Dutchmen continued rolling in the second stanza, scoring four of the frame's five goals to take a 10-3 lead into the half. McCann had two of Union's goals during the period, while Davis and Frey added one apiece. The third quarter followed a similar script, as the visitors kept Plattsburgh State at arm's length. Junior Jack Donahue opened the scoring 3:20 into the frame, while Davis had a team-best two points during the quarter with a goal and an assist.
Union continued to perform well in the final frame, outscoring Plattsburgh 5-1 to complete the victory. Freshman Clayton Arcuri scored the first goal of his career midway through the period, while senior defenseman Ryan Puglisi put an exclamation point on the contest with his first collegiate goal off an assist from classmate Quinn Helmig.
For the game, Union dominated Plattsburgh to the tune of a 62-21 edge in total shots and a 40-10 edge in shots on goal, as well as a 49-18 advantage in ground balls. Sophomore Charlie Phillips made his collegiate debut in goal for Union, making four saves on 10 on-target attempts to pick up his first victory.
Union has two games on the schedule for next week, beginning on Wednesday with the team's Liberty League opener at Skidmore College beginning at 5 p.m.
