Thursday evening Cardinal news and notes - Card Chronicle

erotoko.blogspot.com

—A new episode of the CC Podcast dropped earlier today.

—After an unexpected (and unwanted) week and-a-half off, the Louisville baseball team is finally back in action this weekend at Clemson. Here’s a preview.

—The 19th-ranked Louisville lacrosse team fell to No. 1 North Carolina in its ACC tournament opener on Wednesday.

—On their final NFL Draft big board, Bleacher Report has TuTu Atwell at No. 147, Javian Hawkins at No. 191, and Dex Fitzpatrick at No. 262.

—Jeff Greer’s latest Floyd Street Tribune newsletter is out.

—Louisville won’t hold a press conference or allow interviews of its new staffers until the third and final assistant joins.

—Don’t be surprised if Mack goes outside the box for the hire. There has been no Louisville-side chatter about the assistant coaching search for a few weeks now, even as a handful of young assistants at other schools have expressed interest via agents or media types. Tea laves suggest Mack could have something completely different up his sleeve. After Louisville struggled so much offensively and looked stagnant a lot last season, a different type of hire might shake things up a little bit.

—As of now, Louisville’s view toward the 13th and final scholarship appears to be wait-and-see. The latest inkling was that Louisville would keep an open mind as players continue entering their names in the transfer portal. If there is a can’t-miss transfer option out there, I’d think Louisville would at least kick the tires. If the staff does add someone new, I’d bet on a transfer and not a high school prospect, but, as we always say, things rapidly change in recruiting.

—Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which will host Louisville vs. Ole Miss on Labor Day night, is returning to 100 percent capacity.

—U of L women’s golf senior Lauren Hartlage was selected to the All-ACC women’s golf team for the fourth time of her illustrious college career. That equals a school record. I feel pretty good about it never being broken.

—In related news, the U of L women’s golf team will be hosting an NCAA Regional for the first time in program history.

—A pair of Louisville commits are mashing for the No. 1 team in the state.

—The Belle of Louisville cruised to victory in the 59th Great Steamboat Race on Wednesday.

—Ryan Nanni looks at what quarterback you should draft based solely on what type of name they go by.

—The girl from the “Disaster Girl” meme (smirking in front of the house on fire) is about to graduate from UNC, and will use the money from her upcoming NFT sale to (in part) pay off her student loans.

—Pat Forde went through all 147 years of the Kentucky Derby to find the 20 best and the 20 worst names in the event’s history.

—The post was published, but the stories keep coming.

—The U of L softball team is on the road at Boston College this weekend.

—Forty years later, one horse’s run at the 1981 Triple Crown is a story of failed promise, shattered lives and, in certain eyes, something deeply sinister.

—Louisville baseball has landed a commitment from Ohio outfielder Matthew Pera from the class of 2024.

—This Lamar Jackson viral video is quite a ride.

—The owner of Derby horse Hidden Stash, who was born on 4/20, is VERY intent on letting the world know that his horse’s name is definitely NOT a weed reference.

Jim Boeheim also has a small stake in Hidden Stash, which leads me to believe the name is actually a nose picking reference.

—Does Tom Crean control the internet? Folks, the evidence is piling up.

—The NCAA Board of Governor quietly (and unanimously!) extended the contract of reviled president Mark Emmert this week. It was a move which was met mostly with disgust, anger and defeatism.

—Sheil Kapadia of The Athletic gives the Broncos an A grade for yesterday’s Teddy Bridgewater trade.

Trade grade (Broncos): A

What’s not to like about this move if you’re Denver? Bridgewater is not Patrick Mahomes, but at $3 million for one year, he’s getting paid like an average to below-average backup quarterback. Bridgewater brings leadership to Denver and has earned the reputation of being a great teammate.

This move maintains optionality for the Broncos. They can still aggressively try to find a franchise quarterback in the draft. If they take one early, they can play him whenever he’s ready but don’t have to force him into action. Bridgewater can give them a quality starter who allows them to evaluate their other offensive players.

If the Broncos don’t draft a quarterback, they can roll with Bridgewater and reassess next offseason. If he plays really well, that’s a positive outcome. If Lock surprises and makes a big leap, that’s a positive outcome too.

In the end, the Broncos were rewarded for their patience, didn’t give up significant draft capital and didn’t spend recklessly. This move makes sense for them.

—Only Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes moved more NFL merchandise than Lamar Jackson over the last year.

—Very few teams in college football are returning less production for 2021 than Louisville is.

—Noah Locke is the guest on the latest episode of Cardinal Authority’s podcast.

—California QB Gabe Krug has enrolled at U of L as a preferred walk-on.

—Whenever it comes, Javian Hawkins is ready for his NFL Draft moment.

—Knowing how penalty kicks work should probably be a prerequisite for doing college soccer play-by-play work.

—Awful news from the WNBA world, where Asia Durr is likely to miss a second straight season with COVID-19 long-hauler symptoms.

—Can Aaron Rodgers play point?

—TigerNet previews this weekend’s baseball series between Louisville and Clemson.

—It appears the Louisville football crew hit the track for Thurby today.

—While it’s not expected to be added onto this evening, here’s a look at Louisville’s history with first round NFL draft picks.

—Dez Fitzpatrick could be a late round option at WR for the Arizona Cardinals.

—And finally, happy NFL draft/Derby weekend, kids. The weekend starts on Thursday in Louisville.
