NAMPA, Idaho – With both teams currently ranked as the top two squads in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, it will be an exciting four games when the Western Oregon University baseball team plays at Northwest Nazarene this Friday and Saturday.
Not only are the teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the GNAC standings, but in the NCBWA West Region Poll, Northwest Nazarene is second, followed by Western Oregon in third. Northwest Nazarene moved to No. 13 in the NCBWA National Poll, while the Wolves are receiving votes.
The Wolves are 10-4 overall and 9-3 in GNAC play, coming off of a four-game sweep of Saint Martin's this past weekend. WOU has won five straight and seven of their last eight. It was a pitching showcase for the Wolves this past weekend against the Saints with Mike Peterson taking home GNAC and NCBWA Pitcher of the Week honors for his eight shutout innings in the series opening 4-0 win. Matthew Dunaway followed that up with a seven inning complete game shutout 1-0 victory in game two. The offense delivered clutch hits on Saturday with Blayze Arcano's three-run homer in the eighth inning of game three providing the difference in a 6-4 win. In the series finale, Connor McCord launched a pair of homers to help back Nick Parr's solid start in a 4-1 win.
McCord leads the team with a .375 batting average, tallying 12 hits, four home runs, four doubles, eight runs scored and 14 RBI in 11 starts this season. He leads the team in home runs, RBI, walks and is tied for the team lead in doubles. McCord is slugging .875 and has a 1.351 OPS (on-base, plus slugging). David Gibons is hitting .361 with 13 hits, four doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Derek Maiben leads the team with 18 hits, 10 runs scored and two triples while hitting .360 with a double and seven RBI. Arcano is hitting .347 and is second on the team in RBI with 10 to go along with a home run, two doubles, eight runs scored and the second-most hits with 17. Jacob Maiben is at .342 with 13 hits, two doubles, five RBI and eight runs scored. Justyn Herzog has 11 hits and is second on the team with three home runs while driving in eight. Several others have solid numbers out of the gate this year with Sam Jones holding a .455 average with five hits and two RBI, Jayden Hanna is hitting .400 with a double, a triple and an RBI, Hunter Johnson is hitting .364 with eight hits, three doubles, a home run and five RBI and Josh Berman is hitting .333 with seven hits, two doubles, a home run and four RBI. As a team, WOU is hitting .311 with 127 hits, 21 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs and 64 RBI.
On the mound, Michael Moore and Alan Vasquez have perfect 0.00 ERA this season. Moore picked up the win in his first appearance of the season during game three's win. He pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. Vasquez has a save in two appearances this year working two innings. He has three strikeouts. Trae Perkins leads the team with two saves in seven innings of work and holds a 1.29 ERA. He has seven strikeouts to just one walk. Of the starters, Peterson has a 1.57 ERA in four starts this year going 3-0 in 23 innings. He has 18 strikeouts to just three walks and holds team to a .175 batting average and a 0.74 WHIP. Parr has a 1.98 ERA in three appearances and two starts going 2-0. He has worked 13.2 innings and has 19 strikeouts to just three walks and has a 0.88 WHIP. Dunaway has a 2.37 ERA in four appearances that includes three starts. He is 2-1 in 19 innings, posting 29 strikeouts to just four walks and has a .159 batting average against and 0.79 WHIP. Nathan Bonck collected his second save of the season this past weekend and has worked 4.1 innings in four games this year. Logan Hatley has thrown 21.2 innings in four starts this year, going 1-1 with 24 strikeouts to just seven walks. As a staff, WOU has a 4.09 ERA in 110 innings, tallying 121 strikeouts to just 37 walks.
WOU ranks high nationally and in the top of the GNAC in multiple categories including 39th nationally and second in the GNAC in batting average (.311), eighth nationally and first in the GNAC in complete games (1), 35th nationally and second in the GNAC in ERA (4.09), 78th nationally and second in the GNAC in fielding percentage (.965), 10th nationally and first in the GNAC in hits allowed per nine innings (6.95), 52nd nationally and second in the GNAC in on-base percentage (.407), 58th nationally and first in the GNAC in sacrifice bunts (9), 53rd nationally and first in the GNAC in sacrifice flies (10), 24th nationally and first in the GNAC in shutouts (2), 79th nationally and third in the GNAC in slugging percentage (.450), 11th nationally and first in the GNAC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.27), 58th nationally and second in the GNAC in strikeouts per nine innings (9.9), sixth nationally and first in the GNAC in WHIP (1.11), 40th nationally and second in the GNAC in win-loss percentage (.714) and 15th nationally and second in the GNAC in walks allowed per nine innings (3.03).
Individually, Peterson ranks 47th nationally and second in the GNAC in ERA (1.57), Dunaway is 101st nationally and fourth in the GNAC in ERA (2.37). Jacob Maiben is third nationally and first in the GNAC in hit-by-pitches per game (0.69) and ranks 26th nationally and third in the GNAC in overall hit-by-pitch (9). Dunaway is 42nd nationally and second in the GNAC in hits allowed per nine innings (5.21), Peterson is 55th nationally and third in the GNAC in that same category (5.48). McCord is 45th nationally and second in the GNAC in home runs per game (0.36). Jacob Maiben is 78th nationally and fifth in the GNAC in on-base percentage (.528). McCord is 101st nationally and third in the GNAC in RBI per game (1.27). Perkins and Bonck rank in a tie for 57th nationally and second in the GNAC in saves (2). McCord is 30th nationally and second in the GNAC in slugging percentage (.875). Dunaway is 45th nationally and leads the GNAC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.25). Peterson ranks 60th nationally and second in the GNAC in that same category (6.0). Dunaway is 40th nationally and second in the GNAC in strikeouts per nine innings (13.74). Derek Maiben is 37th nationally and first in the GNAC in toughest to strikeout. He also ranks 60th nationally and third in the GNAC in triples (2) and 59th nationally and third in the GNAC in triples per game (0.14). Peterson is 94th nationally and first in the GNAC in victories (3), is 19th nationally and leads the GNAC in WHIP (0.74) and is 40th nationally and leads the GNAC in walks allowed per nine innings (1.17). Dunaway ranks 23rd nationally and second in the GNAC in WHIP (0.79) and is 95th nationally and second in the GNAC in walks allowed per nine innings (1.89).
Northwest Nazarene is 17-3 overall and 11-1 in GNAC play having won seven straight games. They have gone 9-1 at home this year sweeping Montana State Billings and taking three of four from Central Washington. The Nighthawks were off this past week, but faced Saint Martin's from Mar. 26-27 and won all four games in Lacey. NNU enters the week ranked #15 in the latest NCBWA National Poll.
Ryan Dearing leads the offense with a .438 average, tallying six doubles, three triples and eight RBI. Shawn Grandmont adds a .419 average with four doubles, three triples, six home runs and 33 RBI. John Gonzalez is hitting .279, but has the power numbers with seven home runs and 25 RBI. They have five regulars in the lineup hitting over .300 and three off the bench hitting over .300. As a team, the Nighthawks are hitting .319 with 216 hits, 48 doubles, nine triples, 23 home runs and 171 RBI.
On the mound, Max Holtzclaw has a 0.71 ERA in 12.2 innings. Ben Johnson leads the starting staff with a 1.29 ERA in 21 innings. He is 3-0 in five starts this year. Spencer Schwehr is 3-1 this season in 19.2 innings and has a 2.29 ERA. As a staff, NNU has a 3.70 ERA in 167.2 innings posting 182 strikeouts to just 56 walks.
WOU holds a 105-43 record in the series since 2002 going 48-24 in Nampa and 51-14 in Monmouth. The Wolves won the last meeting in 2019 that came in the GNAC Tournament taking the 10-2 victory. WOU has won the last two in the series, as the last meeting in Nampa, NNU won three of four winning two of the games by a run.
