Bears Split Doubleheader with First-Place Ladyjacks - UCA Sports

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas softball team returned to the diamond for a doubleheader with the first-place Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks on Saturday at Farris Field. The Ladyjacks won the first game 3-0, but the Bears bounced back for a 7-2 victory in game two.
 
UCA moved to 27-16 overall and 15-5 in the Southland and gave SFA its first conference loss of the season. The Ladyjacks are now 28-9 overall and 19-1 in SLC play.
 
Game One – SFA 3, UCA 0
 
SFA came out of the gates fast as the Ladyjacks loaded the bases. Jordan Johnson was resilient and got out of the inning unscathed.
 
Jenna Wildeman led off the bottom of the first with a single through the left side, which turned out to be the only hit for the Bears.
 
Shay Govan put SFA on the board with an RBI single up the middle in the top of the third. In the top of the fifth, Govan hit a two-run home run to left field to put the Ladyjacks on top 3-0, which turned out to be the final score.
 
Johnson threw a complete game in the loss. She struck out five batters and gave up three runs on six hits.
 
Kassidy Wilbur threw a complete-game one-hitter. She finished with eight strikeouts.
 
Game Two – UCA 7, SFA 2
 
The Ladyjacks started game two by getting two runners on base, but Kayla Beaver closed the door to prevent any runs from scoring.
 
Kristen Whitehouse drew a two-out walk on five pitches to start the UCA rally in the bottom of the second. Tylar Vernon followed with a single to center field and advanced Whitehouse to third. Tremere Harris added a single up the middle that drove in Whitehouse and put UCA on top 1-0. With runners on the corners and two outs, Harris stole second and drew a throw which allowed Vernon to steal home to extend the UCA lead to 2-0. Reagan Sperling singled up the middle and was able to advance to second as the SFA outfielder tried to throw Harris out at third. Wildeman singled down the third-base line and a throwing error allowed her to advance to second. Harris and Sperling were able to score on the play. Mary Kate Brown dropped down a perfect bunt for the single, which scored Wildeman. The Bears held a 5-0 lead as the game went to the third.
 
The Ladyjacks got two runs back in the top of the third on a two-run homer off of the bat of Gaby Garcia.
 
SFA loaded the bases again in the top of the fourth, but Beaver was able to get out of the inning unscathed.
 
Harris led the bottom of the fourth off with a single to second base and then stole second. Sperling singled up the middle and moved Harris to third. Sperling then stole second to give the Bears two runners in scoring position. Brown singled up the middle and drove in Harris and Sperling. UCA took a 7-2 lead into the fifth inning, which turned out to be the final score.
 
Beaver threw her 15th complete game and moved to 14-6 on the season with the win in the circle. She finished with four strikeouts and gave up two runs on nine hits.
 
Harris led the Bears in game three with a 3-for-3 performance and scored two runs. Sperling finished 2-for-3 and scored twice. Brown went 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs. Shepherd went 2-for-4 as well.
 
Reagan Chism got the loss for SFA and fell to 3-1 on the season. She gave up seven runs in 3.1 innings in the circle and struck out four. Raigan Mock went 2.2 innings of relief and added four strikeouts.
 
The series comes down to the third and final game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats can be found here and video can be found here.
